Rollin' on 20'sOne of my "kids" is sick.  It has been a long couple of weeks around here.

He's been under the weather for a while and it was with great apprehension that I took him to the doctor.  Jack's and old man in both dog and people years.  I love him so!

The team at White Sands Clinic in Bonita Springs is just awesome.  They've always been awesome.  They've litterally saved Jack a half dozen times so far.  I am counting on them to do it again.

He'$ the Prada pur$e I've alway$ wanted. I think he's pushed on to belt, $hoes and he'$ working through acce$$orie$, now.

The battery of tests revealed he is, for the most part, healthy.  I was dreading liver or kidney disease since he's been pukey and he's a geezer.  His blood and heart are normal.  When they did the X-ray it was discovered that there is something foreign in his stomach.  We don't know what, but it's there none the less.  Now we're playing the waiting game.  (I hope you're not eating your Cheerios) We give him laxative medicine and wait for the "prize" to come out the other end.  If the waiting game doesn't work, they'll have to do something more inva$ive.

The Doctor was sharing with us the great threat that is now befalling dogs in the Bonita Springs area - Parvo (Jack does not have Parvo, thank gosh) There is a major outbreain the area and many dog owners are crying themselves to sleep at night.  A lot of these dogs aren't making it.  I listened to the vet recount case after case that he's treated or euthanized because they were suffering so badly.

!!!!!  If you have a four legged kid, get that dog shots and make sure they're up to date  !!!!!

Parvo is highly contagious and extremely merciless.  It is a virus that attacks the intestinal tract of dogs preventing them from absorbing nutrients and fluid.  It causes vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration and often, death.  If you ever see any symptoms like this, IMMEDIATELY take your dog to the vet.  Every minute counts.

Here are some shocking facts I've learned about Parvo:

  • The Parvo virus can live up to two years in the soil.  If someone's dog goes in your yard, you guessed it, up to two years later the virus can be present (if the dog was infected).
  • If you walk through a yard, field or woods with Parvo virus present, and go into your home you can infect your dog because it's on your shoes.
  • Parvo is a fast and drastic disease.  The mortality rate is extremely high.

The Doctor also shared with me that it's almost a flip of a coin if a dog lives or dies from Parvo.  He told me two dogs, brother and sister, had just moved into a new home with their owner.  The dogs were juveniles, in between their shot series.  Within weeks the dogs fell into the clutches of Parvo.  Although the team at White Sands treated them both aggressively, one lived and one died.  It had never occurred to the owner that the yard could be a silent killer of his dogs.

Please make sure your dog's vaccinations are up to date.  It would be a tragedy for this to happen to the dog you love.

I hadn't heard of this before, I try to keep more in tune since the addition of my four-legged "Coach Purse" Baxter the Cat.  Hope everything turns out well with Jack Chris.

Well, keep me up to date what comes out...that's weird. I know what you mean about the $....I always kept up to date with shots, checkups, ear infections, urinary tract infection and now low blood platelets.  I love my doggie...just came back a half hour ago for yet more blood tests. She's a psycho steroid dog since April and that's okay. She's the grandkid my children wouldn't give me....good luck and good reminder to all!  It also is important to keep up with heartworm medication! (and make sure you can afford a dog...they're just like kids)

Chris, we almost adopted a little dog from the shelter while I volunteered there, she died of Parvo before we could.  I guess I should be happy that I didn't bring her home, but I still feel bad about it.  It's a horrible way to go.  I was very careful with my "pound shoes" and so on while I was there.  It is a very big deal.  Great post, and I'm glad your little investment is doing well.  (I refer to my Sam as a cheap car payment because of all his monthly pills.)

Awwwww Chris, I feel for your little Jack.  I hope he recovers quickly.  Poor baby.

I had no idea that you guys were having an outbreak of parvo.  And I had no idea it's so tenacious!  We'll be extra careful with our Fifi.  Thanks.

Oh....I'm serious....some people get a dog (I watch Animal Planet) and when it gets sick they abandon them (those are true stories right?) And I could never work in a hospital for humans or pets. I feel other peoples pain...therefore, stopped watching Animal Planet and those Detroit humane society stuff. (now we watch COPS haha..no no Dog the Bounty Hunter...)

Parvo is absolutely heartbreaking.. I lived in a town where the entire Humane Society Kennel had to euthanize their adoptees due to an outbreak. I cant imagine neglecting my 4 legged boys and not affording them the shots they need ...They are family.

Thanks Chris for bringing this to the forefront and making sure our "kids " have their immunizations. I will pray for your boy jack to make a speedy recovery! keep us posted.

Chris, it was NOT easy.  But I was only there once a week.  I could tell myself that the ones I loved got homes while I wasn't there.  Except for the couple times I saw otherwise.  I only cried there once.  You'd have been proud.

As well as getting your puppy vaccinated, there are other precautions you can take, and there are alternatives to vet treatments should the worst happen and your doggie does get Parvo.
Without treatment, the mortality rate is about 80%, whereas using products you can administer at home, the survival rate is about 90%.
As it happens, my wife and I have just put together a free book about Parvo which you can download at:
We've only literally just created this book, so we'd really appreciate any feedback you have on it, and we'd also really like people to pass it on to as many other dog owners as possible so that they are forewarned and forearmed about this vicious virus.
Thanks.

Chris,

My wife used to work in a Pet Emergency hospital.  Parvo was pretty common.  They had to keep the dogs that came in with it in isolation because of it being contagious.  The sooner the owners brought their dog the better the chance of the dog surviving.

Mark,

Thanks for sharing.  I will have to pass your link on to my wife to read.  I am sure she will find it interesting.

Chris, I hope everything comes out ok with Jack. I dig not realize there was such a thing as outbreaks of Parvo.  What an awful thing. Makes you wonder about going to dog parks!!

Thaks for the Info.

Who gets to look for the prize when Jack passes the object?  Never heard of Parvo...I'm gonna have to ask our vet if it's common in this area.

Hope jack feels better soon.

Chris,

Our dog is named Jack too!  He is a rescue from the pound - I still wonder who left him at the pound - he is a great dog.  Pets can be so full of personality and really find a way become important parts of our families.  I hope your Jack recovers quickly.

My sister in law got a puppy at a Humane Society... it had parvo and died.... then there was an outbreak at a local puppy store.  They should be shut down for good... but no!

I feel for you.  We lost a dog in March of 06... our beloved Chocolate lab had a cancerous tumor rupture on her spleen.  It was impossible to detect or remove so it was fatal any which way we looked at it.  We were out of town when we had to have her put to sleep.

Then when we returned, my beloved Bulldog Harvey fell ill with urate crystals and stones in his bladder.  One week to the day of Keesha's passing, Harvey was at the animal hospital preparing for surgery.  $3000 and a complete diet remake later, he's still with us...  I told the vet that I wasn't losing 2 dogs in a week...and he's a trooper so his recovery was quick.  It is a good thing because my little Lhasa Apso Nalah would have would have missed him so much.

I hope Jack feels better!

Ours contracted Parvo - we caught it early - and Max is fine... but Parvo is deadly mostly to puppies.  There are several strains and you are right it is so easily spread... Max was 2 weeks behind on his shots - he was hospitalized for 6 days.... I posted about it.... there is a lot to know about that horrid desease.

Just to clarify....seems like some think he has Parvo.

I am guessing Chris is in the back yard looking for Jack's "foreign" object  and that's why she's not back here commenting.

Hope you're wearing gloves....things we do for our dogs!!

I'm new to this group, but wanted to say that I hope Jack is feeling better soon.

Speaking of Parvo, I just heard on our local news that the Lebanon Humane Society (in Lebanon County, PA) is having an outbreak, and several dogs died.  It's a horrible thing to happen.

As for your "Prada Pur$e", I myself have a "Loui$ Vuitton" doggie -- actually I could have had the entire Loui$ Vuitton luggage collection with the $$ I've spent over the past several months - but my little Dugan is so well worth it!

Hello everyone!  Thank you for your warm comments.  Jack is still hangin in there.  He get's his Xray in a few hours to see if the prize is moving.  I'm thinking they're going to do this the hard way.  It occured to me that since Al Gorithm has been rennovating the house the dog may have gotten into painters tape.  Why, at this old age he would eat something is beyond me.  It must have tasted good.  Any how, he likes to tear paper and I think he might have torn tape, swallowed it and now it's a ball in his stomach.  the object has little white flakes on it on the XRay.  I asked the vet, could it be paint? and she said paint shows up like little white flakes.

Now, as real estate agents, should the vet bills be included in the adjusted cost basis of this home for renovation expenses?  Hmmm?  LOL  or should Al Gorithm, Inc. pay the bill?

Sorry for not keeping up with the comments : Missing Sellsius Again and Again

Tami-flu (the 'bird flu" drug) will treat Parvo if it is caught early with magnificent results.  Many vets don't carry it but you can get a perscription from them and have it filled at a human vet office.  Tami-flu is an anti viral and Parvo is a virus which attacks the GI tract.  I do dog rescue and you don't even want to know how much I spend on vet bills each year (I get a VERY nice fruit basket from my vet a Christmas) but I had a little Rescue pup that tested positive for Parvo and came through with no other treatment.  Speak to your vet about it.  I hope your little guy passes the offending bit okay and is just fine..he's awful cute.

A German Shepherd we adopted had Parvo and nearly died - now she is old and going blind but we love her still and she does pretty well getting around unless you move things drastically. Glad Jack passed his whatever and he didn't pass. We have such problems here in MN with tick borne diseases - am preparing my blog on that.

I hope Jack feels better.  My dog is like my child and thus far she's never really been sick.  I couldn't imagine the pain I would feel if she got extremely sick.  I didn't realize that even though she's had her shots that she could still come down with parvo virus.  That makes me nervous about taking her places that other dogs have been.  Keep us up to date about Jack.

Update:  He's still puny.  Not throwin up so much but just not him.  He's had tons of testswith the vet, they're all checking out. I don't know if its old age or he had dog depression.  I started dicing up a steak for stir fry tonight and he was "on it".  The rest of the time he looks like an infomercial for depression.  His eyes are blue, he seems distant.  I just don't get it.

I know this is so trivial to most people but he's "the kid that never talked back". I love 'im.

Chris, Gee I know how you must be feeling. How old is Jack? Does he go outdoors?

It's a good sign he is still attacking the food.

Bella can not take the heat, and as much as she loves being out for the last 2 weeks it has been too hot for her to want to be out... she has been just hanging out kind of listless in the house. But she is not sick.

Keep us posted.

Jack is 12.  He's an inside dog, it's far too hot outside here.  Plus, he's little and we have a resident bobcat licking his chops out back.

He's doing a little bit better but he's still acting funny.  Geezer dog.

I sure hope that Jack is doing better.  Have thought about a natural diet?  Many dogs, especially the little ones, can not handle gluten.. especially corn, wheat or soy.  Many of the processed dog foods have fillers and do not have the proper enzymes and protein for them digest to be healthy.  After years of these foods, their bodies start to have problems.  It is not too late.  Do some research on natural feeding for him and see what you think. I have several resources if you want to e-mail me :) I wish him healthy years ahead.
