There might be more to it than location, location, location

I like to go to networking meetings whenever I can and listen to each individual's 60-second commercial.

One of the things I noticed at a recent meeting is how many people in all industries think that location, location, location is the most important thing:

"I'm from The Pit Stop, which is where Circuit City used to be until they went bankrupt last November."

Is that really the most important thing? I would respond with a resounding "NO," especially since The Pit Stop could be in several industries, like car racing, a bicycle shop, a restaurant, etc.

Why entice your listeners' minds to wander? Time is limited, so spend your time telling your audience about your company, your products, and your services.

Russell, You are so right!  Since I work out of a home office (totally) location where I'm located never comes up.  Now I do always tell the areas that I serve!

Advertising your in an old Circuit City Building may not be good, but location is critical to some businesses and definitely is important for a home.  Is it close to work, close to schools, etc. 

But in Montrose Colorado I think a business that does a good job of advertising, both print and word of mouth, will do fine just about anywhere.  We are a small town and it still only takes 10 minutes to get across town, unless its lunch hour then you better pad it by 5 minutes.  

With todays trend of open malls and drive to the door of the store, I think it also is less relevant.

Depending on the business, location may be critical, especially for walk-ins. Otherwise no.

Hi Russel-

You make an excellent point. It does make one's mind wander to Circuit City, why they went OB, how many business that's happening to now, as well as possibly wondering (while we're on the subject of business bankruptcies), how long the new business will be there!

This sort of thing happens a lot and really takes people away from the message!

Benefit....what's in it for ME ? I may drive a while if it has a's the best fitting, tasting, looking...location is nice...but ohhhh those out of the way places that have something special to offer !

Russel...Since you have limited time to "grab" your audience, you need to have quick hitting, informative content or you have wasted your time.  I think its about you and what you have more than the location.

I was a member of a networking group for two years and I know exactly what you mean.  It always surprised me how people misused their 60 second opportunity to educate the others about their business and what type of referral would be best for them.  There was one lady who each week repeated her business name, address, hours of operation...every week her 60 second chance to network went in one ear and out the other.
