Are You Considering a Retro-Redo for your Bowie or Crofton Home?

By
Real Estate Agent with Long & Foster Real Estate, Inc.

172“Updated kitchen” and “updated bath” are key phrases in any MLS listing for Bowie and Crofton, signaling to buyers that the home decor is probably good – i.e., no longer a relic of the 60’s or 70’s featuring original pink bathroom fixtures and tile or aqua kitchen appliances and metal cabinets.

But wait… that’s not necessarily the case any more, as “retro” becomes more and more popular in homes of that period.  One of my clients was the lucky recipient of my original pink bath fixtures when we finally remodeled our bath last year – one of many people who asked for them.

Just goes to prove that one person’s trash is another’s treasure.

If you want a “Retro Redo” for your Bowie-Crofton area home that preserves the original 60’s and 70’s features, check out Retro Renovation, an online resource with the tag-line Love the House You’re In.  The site features information for re-doing homes from the 40’s through the 70’s, promising to assist homeowners who cherish their older home’s character and want to preserve it. You’ll find answers to frequently asked questions as well as recommendations on retro kitchens, bathrooms, counter-tops, flooring, lighting, paint colors, etc.

You may decide to freshen up the ol’ bath or kitchen with just a fresh coat of paint instead of expensive updating or remodeling, after a visit to this website, and you can call it “retro” instead of “old”.  Even if this isn’t your taste, I’d be surprised if you didn’t enjoy looking at the pictures… they’re bound to bring back some memories for anyone who lived through those decades.

P.S.  Looking for original bath fixtures from the 60’s or 70’s?  You don’t have to scavenge the Bowie and Crofton curbsides on trash day, looking for discards from neighbors who prefer “new”. Check out the Habitat for Humanity ReStores throughout Maryland.

The first house I owned had three bathrooms each with different color fixtures.  Blue, peach and yellow.  Who knew they would one day become "classics" and sought after.

Yikes... I would never want to go back to what was popular in the 70's!

Bill, I'm with you!  surprisingly, it's the 30-something yr. olds that are going for this look.

Cindy, I never would have believed anyone who had a choice would want those colors, but that's what is happening in some cases.  It sure surprised me to find that my pink bathroom fixtures were in high demand.  I couldn't wait to be rid of them!

Hi Margaret, one mans trash is another mans treasure... or is it the other way around, LOL. OK, so the pink bath? Not so much, but I do like the old bathrooms like that, I prefer black and white but what do I know, but that is a bit older time for me. I like the 50's more than the 70's.

The old baths can be in perfect condition but just no the current colors it is a shame to destroy the bath just to change the look.

Andrea - Me too!  I love the black and white and wouldn't hesitate re-doing a bath with that look.  But I'm sure someone who has had that look for the past 60 years would welcome a new look.  Haha.

Terry - I always said that the pink bath would "come back" as soon as I replaced it.  Frankly, I LOVE my new bathroom and have no regrets.

Margaret ~ Sounds good to me. I have a 50 yr old rental home that I remodeled, except for the blue bathroom. The reason I didin't is the tile work was done so well. No missing mortar or joint cracks. I would love to know what these used back then. So, when I go to sell I will call it a "Retro" bath.

HI MARGARET!  I like your positive side to retro. Was just looking at a Tucson "retro" home - pink fixtures, blue mosaics tile floors -- it didn't work for the buyer but you know - it was all very well-cared for - it would be hard to junk it!! --Gabrielle
