If You Want to be Heard Try Speaking!

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Home Jane Realty BRE# 01439865

A post by Haris Dedic got me to thinking about how much we rely on the written word in our everyday communications.

Want to find out how someone is doing, drop a quick email.
@

Want to tell 10 people the same thing, put a group list together and email them all at once.

Want to describe your holiday, upload all the photos from your trip and point people to the site, or email the photos to them.

This is the easy way out.  You don't feel like getting involved in a long conversation with someone but you want to show you care; what better way than via email.

You probably read the answer to your questions while doing 10 other things on the computer.

What happened to picking up the phone and having a real two-sided conversation where you are both listening to each other - really listening!

How many times to we use email to communicate with our clients or prospects!  And how many times do we hear nothing back.  We wonder if they ever received the email.  Did it go into spam?  Do they have no interest in dealing with you.?  Did your email somehow give a negative impression due to the wording?  Sometimes a word in the wrong place can totally change the meaning.
Listen

How do we really know how someone else is feeling unless we actually
talk to them?  How do they know what you really want to say unless they hear the tone in your voice?  "I'm not happy" in an email can sound like a joke, when spoken they will know right away whether you are happy or not.

The telephone is becoming a lost art and pretty soon we will be tranmitting our thoughts telepathically.

Let's hope not.  What will happen to my advantage of having an English accent!

Lori,  that happens a lot with me too.  I send an email and then read it and think, "oh dear, I hope they didn't think something else".

Hey... and you know the biggest advantage of talking vs typing? When you're talking you can lean back in your chair and sip your coffee! I love morning calls!

Timely for me as one of my goals is to make 25 calls a one sitting 3 x a week. It is a challenge, but it does keep nimbe, the teeth, lips, the tip of the tongue (try saying THAT 10 times straight)

Hi Jane,

Awesome post! Those phone calls are very important and are "warmer" than those texts and email. Texts are great for quick "need to know" answers and I do like the ability to use all forms of communications. Remembering there are 4.1 Billion texts a day and ages 42 and under prefer to test, we do need to accommodate our clients! Besides we definitely want you to have an advantage with your English accent!!

Jane.....only one of my builders uses email.....the rest are from the old school and I have no choice but to pick up the phone and speak with them....I love it.....I can always tell what their true feelings are and I can respond accordingly.....that's missing with email.

Hi Jane -- here in the Silicon Valley I deal with a lot of engineers and folks in start-ups -- by and large they want emails, not phone calls. Others like the phone. I try to learn each person's preference and honor it. I must admit, though, that I like the ability to contact folks at odd hours of the day, when I couldn't phone (like now, 5;30 AM)

I'm certain you communicate well in whatever medium you use.

Jane:

I have been finding that more of my clients want to rely mostly on email. I had a client recently who insisted on total email - even while we were negotiating her home purchase.  That was tough on me because I like the human interaction.

Hand up, Jane!  I have been guily of the email veil before!  I always "thought" i was too busy to pick up the phone and call - um, boy was I wrong!  Email does NOTHING for the actually "communication" you have when you pick up the phone and hear another person - so much more gets conveyed that way.

Ruth, the dangers of coffee and breakfast while reading emails.  Food in the keyboard :)

Janice,  it's all about numbers.  I need to mark down mine.  Let me know how you do on your weekly challenge.

Dorie,  why thank you dahling!.  And we should definitely use all the technology we have but not forget we have voices than be put to greater use.

Barb,  absolutely.  You really know what someone is saying when you hear their voices.

Lottie,  thank you.  Yes that is an advantage when you have something to say at 5:30 a.m. :).  And you are right, some people only want contact via email.  Good points.

Claudette,  isn't that frustrating!  And I am not always in front of my email.  Clients text me or email me at the last minute about something when I'm on the road and I don't look at my phone for a while after to check. Call me for crying out loud.

Leesa,  absolutely.  Great point.  The voice really communicates.  I think an email just dictates.

Hi Jane, I'm finding I use email more and more and telephone less than I used to, but one thing I generally do, if it's important, is email the information and then call, to be sure they received it -- so they get the double whammy from me!

Mary,  I never rely on an email arriving if it is something important.  I also follow up with a carrier pigeon.

Email?  Lots of people have moved onto just text messaging!  But I'm with you - guess we're both just retro!

Jane - Email messages can be misconstrued so easily.  People read all kinds of "tones" into emails.  But it sure is an easy and timely way to communicate.  I'll gladly put up with the odd things if I can continue to get responses quickly.

Susan,  unfortunately not everyone is tied to their emails and I have missed things because I didn't check my email. And the funny thing is, some people don't follow up with a phone call to find out why you haven't responded.

Jane, How about this? You call someone to do the chat live, and you get delayed responses as you here magical clicking...sometimes, you even here the inevitable.......you've got mail. I don't hear that all the time........but I do sometimes:( Rude!

So, once you call someone, try to keep them engaged! Mixing it up, seems to be a good route.

Jane, I agree that it is good to give our clients the personal touch by actually speaking to them, but if the conversation covers important points, I recommend that you also follow up with a confirming email, in case there is a question later about what was said.

Susan, absolutely one should document the conversation.  Actually, my brokerage requires a report of all relevants conversations at each closing.  Good point.
