bee

Some time ago I saw a short documentary on the Discovery Channel. It was about an impending crisis in the world of Bees! It described how Bees are disappearing"without a trace". Local, Professional and Hobbyist Bee Keepers have raised the alarm!

  Hive

To date these disappearances have been documented in at least 24 States. The bees are vanishing at an alarming rate that is affecting crops, flowers and other vegetation. This phenomenum is  threatening the very livelihoods of those who grow and harvest the crops and the animal life that feeds on certain vegetation that may disappear! According to a NY Times article "bees are flying off in search of pollen and nectar and simply never returning to their colonies. And nobody knows why"veggies

This occurrence is now commonly being called Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD) and according to Discovery News, some bee keepers have lost up to 80% of their colonies. They are examining the possibilities of a Fungus or Virus or an Immune Disorder as a result of Pesticides. This Immune Suppression could be the AIDS of the Bee Industry.

 flower

It is not only the US experiencing this problem Britain and Ireland have already had several species of Bees become extinct! Several more face extinction if the World's Scientists don't take Action.

It seems to me that with this age of Eco concerns, Eco products, Eco programs and Eco Planning this issue should be front and center. We  as Humans depend on Bees, our Economy depends on Bees . Here in New Hampshire bee pollinated crops employ many Seasonal Workers and fulfill the needs of the new Organic Movement.

This is a serious subject; bees are an important part of the ecology and the disappearing bees  also have an economic impact.  I recently heard that the cell phone technology is  contributing factor. Supposedly the signal gets them disoriented.

There seems to be a lot of theories about what is happening with the bees.  I hope they get to the bottom of this phenomenon.  It is a more serious problem than it seems at first blush.  I saw something about this issue not too long ago.  We should bring this to the attention of our congressional representatives.

Joan, this is so strange.  I have told Sean over and over that the CRICKETS aren't making noises this year.  He's said several times that it's "not summer yet".  I'm going outside right now to see if they're there.  Great post!

Laurie...By the time this gets tha attention it deserves...it may be un-fixable. Not having bees to pollinate would really change evrything!! No fruits, some veggies etc. Scary!!

Well Joan I really think that nature is much smarter than we are - it's balance is exquisite & we've been upsetting it. There are many phenomenon being discovered & reported. We must change.

But for now while we're doing the best we can .....

Eat ice cream!

Joan, I've heard one of the possible reasons for this could be cell phones, they think the towers may be doing something to the bees. :(

Joan, I watch the discovery chanel all the time and hadn't heard about this...And Laurie's remark scared me, she's right---there are no crickets!

Joan- sorry for interjecting- Carole, I've been alarmed about this since April.  The crickets and frogs used to make so much noise, and they're not there this year.  Thank you for confirming it- I thought that it was an east end phenomenon!

Carole & Laurie...the changes with the frogs (don't know about the crickets) have been showing up for some time. Deformities etc. This planet is in trouble and the people controling the purse strings...say it isn't so!

Joan, when I moved here four years ago, I used to tell Sean that the crickets were too loud.  Now, the silence is eerie.  He never noticed; it was the first thing that told me that spring/summer was here.  I have NEVER had a summer without the voices- Colorado had them, too, so I've been wondering (and alarmed).  Thank you for permitting me to sound it!

Joan, From what I have discovered from multiple web sites, NH does not currently have funding for researching the obvious disappearing bee phenomenon. My gardens in Loudon,NH which normally have large populations of bumble bees, various wasps, flies and some honey bees show no bumble bees (save for one small one I saw yesterday) and one honey bee I spotted by chance recently. There are just a handful of wasps, few flies. I also noticed the black fly season seemed shortened and there have been very few if not any mosqitoes at night - which might be considered no great loss except the dragonflies eat them. NH legislators should make this bee mystery a priority for funding if it is important enough for them to have fresh fruit, vegetables and honey from local producers on the table. Think of how devastating this may become to orchards, farmers and the honey producers in this state alone.

Alison...nice to have a visitor!

Your observances are very frightening to hear. Do you know of any local growers that are trying to initiate legislative interest? That is probably the place to get the ball rolling. I know they (legislators) can't solve the problem but they certainly need to be made aware of it and perhaps be looking for ways to set aside funds for research. This may even come under the auspices of Conservation?

I would love to discuss this with you further. Please feel free to email me.

Correct me if I am mistaken but was'nt it Einstein who predicted that the world would end 4-5 years after the extinction of bees?

Bees are in very short suppl here in Virginia and very few people outside the botanical world realize the effect they have on our very existence, Karen

To BEE or not to BEE ?  This is very alarming.  I don't think many people are aware of this crisis.  I wonder what New Hampshire is doing?  Perhaps Jeff should have some sort of pro-active study bill introduced - I think it would great for the Realtors(r) to sponsor such an initiative!

Pete...I am amazed that this issue hasn't had much interest! I wrote this a while back but never saw a TV special about it till, I think it was last week.

I don't know if Einstein said that or not but it sure makes sense! We are doing a good job of destroying our planet!

Karen...I agree! I'm afraid most people are so far removed from where their food comes from...they only know the grocery store....they only worry about bees in the context of being stung!

I have heard there is also a lot of concern about frog populations dropping dramatically as well. No bees - no honey....no frogs - extra mosquitos!

Joan~

My friend is a bee keeper. Her hives are OK, but she is very concerned about the situation all across the nation. Shannon commented, " No bees - no honey....no frogs - extra mosquitos! .." I'd like to add..
no food...

AND ask the question...what can a real estate professional do to help out?

Hiya - With 2012 just over the horizon and the alleged return of planet X (nibiru) to our solar system, strange natural phenomena is hardly surprising at all. Gaia is in serious crisis. With regard to Einstein's quote on BEES, I did some research and would advise anyone interested to visit www.snopes.com/quotes/einstein/bees This will fully clarify the issue. We must all do everything we can to live in harmony with nature. Kind regards - Pete.

modern man and his pesticides! My mother used a can of spray bug poison DAILY in the house when I was a kid and our pet raccoon was at ground zero often to inhale this! The raccoon had cancerous lumps throughout his body at around age 12 and had to be put down - I personally blame pesticides! People spray their plants constantly - of course it will effect the bees! MAN needs to clean-up his act before we destroy the entire planet!

Hi Pete...I actually wondered about that...it seemed a little convenient! But I don't think it changes the seriousness of what is happening and the need to determine why!

I'm going to have to go check out nibiru :)

I hear ya B&B...I also think that is where the finger will ultimately land...bees have been exposed to all this stuff for at least 50 years now and I believe the stuff is breaking them down!
