From NC Realtor Report 1/20/2010:

N.C. Fares Better than Most in Year-End Foreclosure Rates
Foreclosure filings increased 14 percent nationally in December from November, the first monthly increase since foreclosure activity peaked in July, according to a RealtyTrac report out today. North Carolina, however, posted an overall 16.1 percent decline in foreclosure rates in 2009 when compared to the previous year, and was one of only 10 states posting a decline in yearly foreclosure rates while the majority of states worsened.

So apparently we here in NC aren't fairing nearly as badly as some states.  Of course that's no consolation to to those who have lost their homes.  My neighbors a couple of doors down went into foreclosure this week.  They were hard working middle class folks, like so many others, that both lost their jobs and then their home.  I can only imagine what they are feeling.  Let's hope that this year the economy gains steam, jobs become available and not too many people will lose their homes.
