Research has shown that it takes just a few seconds for people to make a decision about you and your website...whether they want to stay or go.  But what happens when the site takes forever to load?  Are people going to sit and wait?  It's not likely.  Most often people will click their back button and choose the next site on the list of search results.  And there goes your potential client.  It's easier for them to leave when they don't have to "walk out the door"... it's just a little click and no looking back.

The loading time of your website can make or break that initial contact; your first impression.  The biggest drain on load time is usually images.  Check out latest Marketing Tip about your website load time and what you can do to improve it.

Images and "splash screens", boy do I hate splash screens on websites.  It's pretty much a sure way for me to do somewhere else.

I'm with you on this one.  I probably click off one or two sites a day (at least) because they take forever to load.  I just had a thought.  Wonder if those sites (the ones that do PPC) have to pay for people like me who have every intention of clicking on the site but abort the effort when it seems to be too much trouble.

Keeping user retention is highly critical because as you rightfully pointed out, user can walk out the door by using the back button.

Alexander, according to Submit Express, 10-20 sec is way too long. They recommend 3-5 or less.

Full agreement about the splash pages! I can't stand the flash slideshows with the 'pretty pictures'.

Luckily, I usually have a fast connection so those 10-20 second websites usually come up in the 3-5 range. ;-)

I wish everyone had the ability to surf on such a fast connection but reality is not there yet.
