The Battle that ended the War of 1812 was fought on this day in 1815, 195 years ago today. Andrew Jackson and his band of Americans routed the British in Chalmette down the Mississippi River from New Orleans. Louisiana was not a state at that time but a territory acquired from France in 1803 in the Louisiana Purchase. New Orleans was owned by France and Spain before that time.
People in New Orleans like to fly flags for all occasions. You will see the various flags that flew here over time. The British Flag never flew in New Orleans but the Spanish, French and Confederate flags have had their time. The first permanent settlement in Louisiana was established in Natchitoches in 1714. This is a little known fact. New Orleans started as a settlement in 1718 a couple of years later.
