Are you cheating yourself out of ActiveRain points each time you post?
Do you put your content in a channel and assign a topic when you post? If not you are cheating yourself out of 25 points each time you post.
That's 250 points a week...
We've had channels since late 2008... but not everyone uses them. It's still marked NEW.

If you did not get 225 points on your first 10 posts in a week, you've cheated yourself out of ActiveRain points.
You are cheating yourself out of ActiveRain points AND Google juice...
If you have an Outside Blog if you are not using Channels and Topics you are cheating yourself out of Google juice. If your Outside blog side bar looks like this:

If your Outside Blogs sidebar is just showing Blog Archives by month, you are missing out on lots of search engine traffic.
You are not showing Google (and other search engines) words like:
Home Buying, Home Improvement, Home Selling, Mortgage / Finance, Moving, Real Estate Investing, Real Estate Market...
Nor are you sharing Topics.... words that would help search engines and the buyers using them find your content, geographic words, descriptive words.
The Channels and Topics become Categories on your Outside Blog. That's what Google and search engines read.
Don't use an Outside Blog so you are not worried? The Channels and Topics are how Search Engines find your content on ActiveRain too. ActiveRain made a change in late 2008. To show up in the search engines use Channels and Topics.

Maureen, I remember when I discovered those extra 25 points. Thanks for pointing this out to everyone. I'm going to share it with a friend of mine who is a newbie here.
Have a great day!
Great blog I do use the channels once I learned about the 25 points and the google juice but didnt at first because I didnt fully understsand what it was about.
GREAT post Maureen! I'm sure many do/did not know this! I better go back thru my older posts and make sure they all have an entry!
This is really helpful information. Thanks for posting!
Maureen, that makes my day. Although I am a little late to the party (about a year or so). Not so much for the points but the google juice. Thanks for bring this topic to light.
WHO DAT!
I had no idea!! Thanks for the information, Maureen. I stumbled on Channels and Topics a couple of times, by accident, and had no idea why I was putting anything in there. I didn't know anything about the points or, more importantly, the SEO implications. Thanks again. -- Tanya in Montreal
Thanks all for the comments.
Tanya looks like you can put your blog in Channels and get points and let Google know where to find the good stuff. You can go back and take a redo. It's better to look at the chest of drawers on the front page and make good choices about where to Channel your content and what topics to use, rather than stuff it in the ActiveRain junk drawer (ActiveRain Channel, a Professional Channel.)
You get the points even if you just stuff everything in the "junk drawer".... it's a start.
Maureen, Thank-you for the great information! The whole "channel" and "topic" thing has been confusing to me.
I'm going back and and checking my blogs.
Thank you Maureen, this is a very helpful post in helping us get the most out of our work here.
Thanks for the info Maureen, I just discovered the extra 25 points not long ago and your additional information is very helpful.
As a "newbie" to AR and who has yet to post anything, I really appreciate these helpful hints!! Thanks!
well there you go again....making my day! this is news to me and news we can use! Rock On Maureen! I'm gonna click on the re-blog button for the second time today :)
Hey, I didn't know we got extra points. I just used it if I thought it was relevant. You are becoming the Active Rain Manual!
Maureen, and if any of the newbies forgot, they can go back and retroactively add the channels!
On the reverse side...the search is a valuable tool for all things specific in real estate...if you wanna know about...you name it...you can find it ....! Blog on ....
Thanks all for the comments. A big "huh?" to Sally's since if you don't put your blog in channels or use meaningful topics... or if you hide them because they are all snarly SEARCH won't find you.
Pat good point. Newbies and older members (been on AR for a long time) you can and should put your blog in channels even if you did not do it the first time.
You can put the posts from the very beginning in Channels.
On a post about WordPress blogs that I Re-Blogged Bob Stewart left a comment about how forgiving of change our ActiveRain Outside blogs are. At the time I barely noticed it. Categories are good things for blogs to have and ours come from Channels and Topics.... and redos don't break the links.
Maureen, if it was not for Teresa, I would not have know, what a great informative blog. I will have to bookmark and use it for future post. I think Russell Ray mentioned that if you re-do an old post you loose points could you confirm that as fact or it is achange since he wrote that a few months ago?
I believe thats been corrected,
Terrific, informative post. It really does pay to take the time to learn the site in order to maximize the points available.
Thanks
You can always go back and add your post to Channels and get the 25 points. Or correct the channel.. you don't get more points (unless the system is broken... I think it has given me points for corrections... that is another story...) The reason to do it is so Google and people can find your content. For some reason I have recently shoved a few posts into the junk drawer (ActiveRain Channel) by accident. When I see it (easiest to see in the right column of my Outside Blog) I rechannel it.
