Recently Rockyou, a website that makes software for social media sites had it's site hacked.  The interesting part of the hack was that the hackers posted all 32 million passwords for a short time on the Internet.  Many Internet Security Companies grabbed this information to study before it was taken down.

One company, called Imperva took these passwords and examined the list to see if they could figure out what the most popular passwords in this list of 32 million passwords.  The list is below and I was surprised to find that a couple of my temporary passwords were in the top ten list. Have a look and see if any of your passwords made the top ten below.

I added the text of the top ten below for those of you who cannot se the image.

1. 123456

2. 12345

3. 123456789

4. password

5. iloveyou

6. princess

7. rockyou

8. 1234567

9. 12345678

10. abc123

Hi Wayne, I can't see the password list.  Would be interested to see the most common passwords.  I wonder if one of them is "password"?

I saw this same thing on Yahoo this morning.  123456 I think was the most popular and PASSWORD was also high on the list.

Hi Wayne,  I heard something the other day, where most people have passwords like these:

        "password, 123, 1234, 12345, 123456, etc"

You really don't have to be a hacker to realize that these are way too easy for any average person to get a hold of...

Sad but sooooo true...  Thanks for the blog...  ;>))

I heard about this, but I can't see the list either.  Maybe you can upload the image again...?  Thanks!

Hi Wayne, good information, but I am way ahead of the hackers.  My password is my birthdate + the number of stars in the sky divided by the average temperature in Boston on July 19th, add my two kids names and then divide it by the number of times my wife has aggrevated me.  And if you guess it is Password, Nope!!

If you clicked on his link, he accessed all of your personal information. Wayne just hacked you.

I added the text version for those who cannot see the image. Some of you who cannot see that image are probably using Vista or have a setting unchecked in your browser security settings. I will be happy to fix that for $300 an hour

I can see it in Google Chrome just fine.  IE I can not see it so I uploaded the image again and everyone should be able to see it.  Some of you may see it twice.

Wayne -

Good post.  I know this first hand.

When I started in real estate my first company set up my user profile in their system with the default password "pass", which I was supposed to change ASAP.

Well, my second time logging in, I selected the wrong user name for the drop down box.  It was a long time agent just above my name.  Guess what the password was?  Yep.  It was "pass".

She must have gone for years without changing it.  Needless to say I changed mine immediately.

I'm sure that happens a lot.

Hey Wayne,

Funny but I heard something just the other day that was similar, just amazing.

As for me, the only one I have on your list is my BIKE lock. I don't want to get stuck parked out under the pier at the beach, or a local eatery and then need to walk home.

I'm pleased mine did not make the list, and probably never would. It's totally off the wall and very personal!

That said......

I'm with Thom -- I gave up my simple password a few years ago and now use a program called RoboForm to both create complex passwords, and help me keep up with them.
