Dog Plucked From Raging River ~ Dangerous Rescue Done With Precision

Yesterday I was transfixed watching a poor dog who was trapped in the raging Los Angeles river.

  • He was walking on a narrow strip of land with water gushing and swirling past him on either side.  Attempts to get him from the shore had failed. He finally made his way to a retaining wall.  It was too steep for him to climb up and out of the river.

The dog was getting tired and confused.  I was sure he was going to be swept away. I was hoping they would get a boat or helicopter to rescue him.  What made the rescue very dangerous was this portion of the river had high tension wires crossing over.

  • A swift river rescue boat was trying to get to him, but they were having a hard time. Along came a helicopter.  His first approach failed because of the wires.  Finally he flew under the wires from another approach. The heart warming rescue on this video took place.

When the firefighter got to the dog he was so panicked he bite the man in the hand. I watched a video shot from another vantage point, and could see how aggressively the dog was biting the firefighter.

  • Again, I thought that would abort the rescue.  Not so.!  This guy must have been a real animal lover.  He endured the bites to get a good grip on the dog and bring him to safety.

I heard him interviewed today on Fox.  The brave firefighter will have to see a hand specialist this week.  He seems real nonchalant about the bites he sustained.  According to the rescuer over 1000 people have called the shelter willing to adopt this lucky pup.

I have to admire the tenancy of this firefighter.  These are the people who do a thankless job, and risk their lives every day for you and me.

Along with our military they deserve our utmost respect and support.

I saw that too Bonnie - I would like to adopt that doogie - he is too cute - I understand he bit his rescuer - I know he didn't mean it - but was excited - I would have bitten him as well

Nick,  The poor dog was just in a panic.  I've encountered dogs like that doing rescue work for shelters.  Usually you have some time to try and coax them.  There was no time in this instance.  You are right - he did not mean to hurt his rescuer.  Hope he gets a good home.

Why didn't the dog have an identifying collar?  Firefighter was on FoxNews this AM saying they have hundreds of calls from people wanting to adopt the dog - where are the dog's "human/family"?

Wallace,  No one came forward to claim him.  They might be afraid they will be handed a bill.  He may have been a stray.  Fortunately as you said hundreds of people came forward willing to give him a home.

Melissa,  I'm so glad it turned out ok.  I watched it thinking the worst might happen to the poor dog.

Chris, I actually watched it live for over an hour.  they tried several other things which were unsuccessful. The poor dog kept wandering on this narrow ledge that seemed to be shallow.  Around him on both sides the current was raging.

I was afraid when he started to bite they would abandon him.  Much credit should go to that firefighter for risky his life to save this helpless creature.

Yolanda,  it was a very risky rescue.  The helicopter pilot should be commended as well for going under those high tension wires that way.  One miscalculation could have been disastrous.
