Warm Up An Open House This Weekend in Virginia Beach

Why not warm up your open house in Virginia Beach this weekend with some great Mulled Cider with Butter.

2 quarts fresh ciderr                                 3 cinnamon sticks (broke up) plus 10 for garnish

4 Tablespoons butter                               1/2 teaspoon ground ginger

1/2 cup firmly packed dark brown sugar      1/4 teaspoon grated nutmeg

10 thin halved orange slices                      1/3 cup dark rum

1/2 medium cored but not peeled apple     4 whole cloves

Place the cider in a large pan over medium heat til warm

While the cider is warming, melt the butter in a large heavy sauce pan over medium heat, add the sugar and stir for a minute, add the warm cider and stir until the sugar is dissolved.

Add half the orange slices, all the apple slices, the halved cinnamon sticks, cloves ginger , nutmeg and rum.  Stir and cook at a simmer for 8-10 minutes.  

To serve garnish with a cinnamon stick and orange slice.

Gene,  I've always liked hot cider -- but I have never had it with rum.  It sounds like a great idea.
