SEO Basics -- Understanding Duplicate Content

By
Mortgage and Lending with Peachtree SEO

As mortgage and real estate professionals, many of us work hard at generating our own leads through website(s).  After a few experiments with lead services, I can tell you most of them are a serious waste of money!

Where to get content for your site?  Can you use it on multiple sites?  What about syndicated articles?

The answer here is quite simple -- Google rewards originality, and yes, Googles does penalize sites for having duplicate content.

If you have the same content on multiple web addresses, Google and other search engines may filter out your site from the ranking.  In theory, the oldest site should win, and the sites that "copied" your content will be blocked.

But..... it doesn't always work this way.  I've had content I wrote on one of my sites copied by someone else, and they ended up ranking and my site was penalized!!   If you have one page of duplicate content, or a few paragraphs, you won't see the entire site banned.  However, if you leverage lots of the same content throughout your site -- say goodbye to any type of ranking.

This is one knock against syndicating article content out.  When people reuse your article -- even though they give you a link and attribute as the author, you run the risk of the search engine using the new article and blocking out your original posting.

This is one of the reasons that cookie-cutter template sites never do well.  Imagine hundreds of people with what is in essence the same website with different logos/address and maybe color scheme.  None of those sites will ever rank well.

Brian,

i heard it so many times that those cookie cutter sites never do well, but this is the first time I understand why as clearly as i do now.

Sometimes simple answers are not obvious until someone (like you) points them out.

Thanks for that.

It matters to us as much as it matters to you.

Thanks for the information.  It is something I have always wondered and this helps clear things up.

Brian, that is exactly why I paid to have my own site developed rather than use a template....it is exactly why it took me a year to write all of my own content. Now, I am enjoying high rankings for various key words that I targeted.

Thanks Jon and Mike.

In general Jon - the cookie cutter sites go wrong with poorly designed sites that are heavy on graphics/flash and lack the content/keyword focus that top rankings require in Google.

If you have a page, shoot it over to me at brianaande@gmail.com and I'll send you back a quick analysis.  I've got a few slick software programs that make tracking my sites and analyzing factors effecting SEO easy.

Do you need to actually erase all the duplicate verbiage, or can you just click the box to 'hide' the page?  I'm sure my site needs a thorough rub down and clean up.

Hi Sarah,

Either one.  I'm all about cleaning up things like that to improve the searchability of my sites.  If you have lots of keyword rich content and follow some basic rules with each pages <title> tag, and you'll be on your way.

Eric - I agree.  I always use custom sites, and usually rely on WordPress for ease of maintenance.  I'll take 1-year of great content over the best looking graphics/video/flash site anyday.

It's all about leads!

Brian,

So are you against syndicating articles? Or was this a one time glitch?

Original content ... I understand the importance and why "cookie cutter" websites would not have the same SEO appeal (even if they are pretty).  Thanks for sharing.
