A negotiations book by a BLIND Real Estate Broker that will change your life!

I just got an incredible phone call that just made my day and made me rethink my goals and aspirations for 2010.  My real estate inspiration comes from a blind real estate broker-Joseph Klatt of Klatt Realty in La Jolla, CA.  ( www.KlattRealty.com ) Joseph called me to tell me that he finally wrote the book that I always wanted him to write.

PLEASE read the previously post I wrote about Joseph: http://activerain.com/blogsview/823811/a-blind-man-is-outselling-you-why- .

To make a long story short, Joseph has become an incredibly successful real estate agent, broker and mediator in one of the most expensive cities in the country, with an office on one of the most expensive streets in La Jolla.  I met Joseph many years ago as I had to hear his story in person, as I could not comprehend the possiblity of what he has accomplished.  Honestly, today, I still can't quite comprehend it.  He, unconsciously, follows the same concept that most very successful agents follow: MINDSET.  His plan was to be a successful real estate agent and he did it.  My favorite line that he left with me was this: "I believe I have an advantage over sighted people".

Joseph KlattI had asked Joseph a while back to write a book, as very few agents believe me when I tell them his story....as it does seem to most, incomprehensible that a blind man is kicking their butt.  He said that he had been thinking about writing a book but never got around to it.  So I pressed him and he said that he would start thinking about it.

I really believe that he does not understand how truly remarkable he is.  You talk to him and talking to him is no different than talking to any top producing agent.  Many times, I felt like an idiot asking him questions as he reply was no different than most would reply.  I had asked him if he had ever sold any homes outside La Jolla.  He said of course; matter of fact, he just sold a home up in San Francisco recently.  (Huh?)   I asked him how he did that.  He said that he got on a plane with his client, went to San Francisco, showed a few condos the client wanted to see, and made an offer on one.  Probably the same answer you may have replied; but you are probably not blind.

So Joseph tells me that he got his book published and can be purchased at several book stores such as Barnes and Noble, or from Amazon.com.  The title is "DEAL MAKER"  "LESSONS FROM THE BLIND NEGOTIATOR".

Read his book.  Read his story.  It will not only give you an incredible education on negotiations, it will be a life changing moment. To this day, I keep a copy of a newspaper ad of his in my wallet as inspiration to me going forward when all seems impossible.

Tim,  What a great story and so relative to our business. Joseph is probably not distracted by anything other than his client and can listen far better than most agents.

The day I read your original blog post, I reblogged it and posted a link to it under my profile picture on Facebook where it remains to this day, with the comment about the blind man in La Jolla kicking my behind.  Every once in a while I think about changing it to something else, but can't bring myself to do it.

Over 2,000 homes sold…..

I remember every question asked.

How did you get started in Real Estate.

A: I got my real estate license and my dad knew of a broker that got me phone duty.

How did you study through classes?

I did not know Brale, so  learned to memorize what the teacher was teaching.

How did you get your first sale?

A couple came in and there were no agents. They wanted to see a particular condo.  I told them I could show them the condo, but they would have to drive.  They laughed.  I showed the condo, and they later ended up buying it.

And the story goes on.........

Over 2,000 homes sold…..

I am so glad he wrote this book, as I have told so many people and they give me this look......like..."Tim, you have been sippin' too much wine today".  He makes it seem so logical.  He honestly does not understand the deal.  He would say "People call me and want to see a home, so I show it to them.  I usually joke and say I could drive, but we may not get there.  People call me to list their home, so I list it".  I felt that my questions were condescending, but they were not meant to be.....but boy did I feel like a fool after hearing the answers.  Crap, just do it.

He goes to every property tour, but listens.  He knows every listing on the market from other agent comments.  "Oh, the house with the yellow kitchen".

So when I complain that am low on listings, I pull out that ad of his from my wallet and say to myself "this son of a gun is kickin' my butt, so get out there and make it happen".

Your agent under the sun

The quote "If a man wishes to be sure of the road he threads on, he must close his eyes & walk in the dark"(from St John) immediately came to my mind as I read the story.

Joseph is an embodiement of that concept!
