My owner is a Realtor with Century 21 Award in San Diego.I'm not a big history reader, but anything that is connected to cats usually gets my attention, regardless of how old it is.

Recently the Supreme Council of Antiquities in Egypt announced that archaeologists discovered a 2,000-year-old temple in Alexandria that might have been dedicated to Bastet, the Egyptian cat goddess.

I had never heard of Bastet before, but she looks rather cute, don't you think?

Bastet, Egyptian cat goddess

Certainly not as cute as Zoey the Cool Cat, but, hey, Bastet is a couple of thousand years older!

I read about Bastet at Wikipedia, but I must admit I still haven't a clue who she was. Ancient history, mythology, and all these gods and goddesses confuse me. Let's just say cats are as adorable now as they were 2,000 years ago and leave it at that -- LOL

☺☻☻☺

If you have a picture of your cat, please let it come out to play with all the other ActiveRain kitties by posting its picture here. Let's see how many cats we can get by the end of the year.

If you love cats, you really need Peg Silloway's book, The Cat Lover's Book of Days. It makes enjoyable all those hours when your cat is ignoring you.

Jim...I agree Zoey certainly outshines Bastet.  Infact, until now I had never even heard of Bastet.

I have heard of Bastet but really, she looks a little moldy and not quite all together. Zoey wins. Of course, I like my cat best. You can see Sasha in the post I just put on AR Cat lovers.

Hey, Jim. Bastet comes no where near Zoey's cuteness. Thanks for sharing a bit of history, Jim

Jim,  The Egyptians are interesting because of their belief that Bastet, a cat, was a goddess.  The most interesting thing is that cats remember that they were once gods and goddesses and expect us to treat them as such.

Interesting!  I had never heard this before but my 3 cats said, "Well, DUH! Of course there was a cat goddess!"  :-)

Hi Jim,

I don't think any cat could be as cute as Zoey:)  No wonder kittys are so uppity sometimes, it must be in their genes getting all that adoration and all down through the centuries.

I love Bastet!  What fun you must have had learning this.  I love everything to do with Ancient Egypt, and so does my daughter.

Hi Jim-

As I child I spent my days in the university library and the Egyptology section fascinated me.  Of course, with the lack of carpeting (cut down of constant vacuuming), and (I assume) fewer counters to keep the cats off of, they were probably a bit easier to worship...

That Zoey is a cutie!

There are beautiful statues of Bastet in the British Museum and the Met in NYC, among others -- my cats are well aware that they are of royal and sacred lineage and therefore are to be worshipped and served....

Hi, Jim. I grew up in Hartford, Connecticut and we went, on class trips, to the Wadsworth Atheneum where they had a mummy on display, among other things! The person mummy had a cat mummy and the cat mummy had a mouse mummy. Howe cool is THAT?!

Hey, everyone.

Thanks for stopping by and commenting.

I have read all the comments, but since this post is rather old, rather than making comments here in my post to each and every one of you, I'll just let everyone know that I have read all the comments and if there are any questions, I'll answer those. Otherwise I'll simply post this comment and then head over to your blogs soon to visit and do some reading and commenting. I hope you'll have a nice welcome mat out for me!

I'm still fighting to get an escrow closed that was supposed to close last week. As soon as I get everyone to jump through all these hoops, I hope to get back to being more regular here at ActiveRain rather than waiting until the weekend to do all my posts and reciprocal comments.

Don't forget to let your cat come out to play with all the other ActiveRain kitties. Your cat-friendly dogs can come, too!

If you need a great cat book, get yourself a copy of Peg Silloway's The Cat Lover's Book of Days.

Hope all is well with everyone.
