Kelly Kulick Makes Sports History - 1st Woman To Win A PBA Tour Title - I'm So Proud To Be A Woman Bowler!

Kelly KulickI was so proud to not only be a woman but to be a woman bowler last Sunday as I watched 32-year old Kelly Kulick of Union, New Jersey become the first woman to win a Profession Bowlers Association Tour Title by capturing the 45th PBA Tournament of Champions at Red Rock Lanes in Las Vegas.

I cried with tears of joy at the accomplishment that Kelly achieved and at the impact of what her performance will do for woman and the sport of bowling.

In a sport dominated by men, Kelly's win was truly a historic one.  The PBA Tour is not for the faint of heart with its grueling qualifying and match play format to make the finals each week.  You not only have to be physically fit to compete in the sport of bowling but have a great mental game as well when each and every shot and pin counts.

Kelly was seeded in the #2 spot in the ESPN telecast in the 4-player finals.  Her performance against top seed and 2006 Tournament of Champions winner Chris Barnes in the title match was almost flawless in her 265-195 victory.

Starting out with four consecutive strikes, Kelly opened in the fifth frame with a 7-10 split.  She finished Barnes off with five more strikes  and a nine-count on her final ball to close out the match and take home the $40,000 first prize and a two-year PBA exemption.

To put in perspective the magnitude of this historic win here is a quote from former tennis star and Women's Sports Foundation founder Billie Jean King:

"Kelly Kulick's win today at the PBA Tour's Tournament of Champions is not only historic, it serves as a motivational and inspirational event for girls and women competing at all levels all around the world," King said. "Kelly had a great week, defeating several of the top-ranked men's bowlers in the world, and hopefully she can truly enjoy the moment and appreciate how it is not only a big deal in bowling, but a major moment in her life and potentially the lives of others."

Kelly is a former 3-time collegiate champion from Moorehead State University, a former two time Collegiate Bowler of the Year and a two-time member of Team USA.

On the women's professional bowling front Kelly won the 2007 USBC Queens Tournament, was the Professional Women's Bowling Association (PWBA) Rookie of the Year in 2001 and won the Women's U. S. Open in 2003.  She was the first women to achieve a PBA Tour exemption earning that coveted spot through the PBA Tour Trials during the 2006-2007 season.  In 2006 she also won a PBA regional title.

On a day when most people were glued to their televisions watching football games, Kelly Kulick made her mark in sports history in the game of bowling.  Her feat did not go unnoticed by NFL star Terrell Owens who tweeted about it to his followers shortly after her win.

Kelly's fan page on Facebook has been inundated with congratulatory messages and thousands of new fans.

To be a witness to what I feel is the best performance I've ever seen in professional bowling given the tremendous pressure that Kelly was under makes her accomplishment that much more spectacular.

Congratulations Kelly!!

Damn wouldn't you just know it, I notice the feature and am going down to write a comment and before I can clear my fingers I get the scowl from Big Bob to keep it down. Anyway, Donna I don't bowl, that ball is murder on my drivers, but whenever you can get a cross gender competition such as this and have the outsider pull it off it deserves recognition. Was that okay Bob?

Donna that is a huge accomplishment.  But a bigger accomplishment is to finally see you back in the Rain again.  Where have you been?

Donna that is terrific news, I did see it on the news.  I think you would get a laugh if you saw how I hold a bowling ball.

Hi Donna...Congratulations on your feature post, great post. We no longer even have a bowling alley in Victoria, I played for many years, it a great sport for both sexes.

Cheers

Bob - Thank you so much!  I felt that while this topic may not be related to real estate or my local area, it was important for everyone to know just how spectacular this accomplishment was for Kelly who wasn't given a chance and proved without a shadow of a doubt of her ability to compete with the best bowlers in the world to win the prestigious Tournament of Champions.  It is a day I will never forget!

Ed - LOL!  I can always count on Bob to have my back. :-)  When Michelle Wie and Annika Sorenstam competed on the PGA tour it was all over the national news and they failed.  Kelly did what no woman bowler has ever been able to do and should be hailed across the world for her historic victory.

Sharon - There are many people who don't see bowling for the true sport it is.  I've been waiting years for it to become part of the Olympics and hope that now with Kelly's win it might open the gates to becoming a possibility.

George - From someone who has bowled and competed against the "boys" in leagues and tournaments it could sometimes be intimidating.  For Kelly to compete on the level she did and win was a dream come true and put to bed any doubt of who the best bowler in the world was on Sunday.

Jennifer - It was the most awesome bowling performance I have ever seen.  As for your bowling it looks like I might just have to make a trip to New York to see! :)

Fred - No bowling centers!  The people in Victoria don't know what they're missing.  Bowling is the single biggest participation sport in the world.  Maybe it's time for you to build one! :)

That is exciting news.

I have not bowled in years but a group of my friends are planning on bowling in about a month.  When I lived in Akron Ohio we hung out with some pro-bowlers. I knew a womans national champ in the early 80s.  Bowling alleys were smokey nasty places back then, now they have clean air but I have not been to one in years.

I don't really follow the sport.  I missed this.  Congrats to Kelly and women bowlers everywhere.

Donna - I started bowling when I was 8, and good from the start.  One girl on my team was terrific and we stayed together year after year until we both graduated from high school and went our separate ways.  She bowled right handed with a leftie spin.  Her average was almost as good as mine, and she was terrific on the 10 pin!

I have been watching bowling since I was a kid.  Got turned on to it by my dad.  He would never had thought a woman could win but would have thought it was cool.  Very cool

Maureen - I've been bowling for close to 30 years with a recent 7 year break and just got back into the game about a year ago and so glad I did.  I've been a follower of both the men's and women's tour for many, many years.  I had the opportunity in the 90's to bowl in a number of semi-professional level tournaments and bowled in a couple of WIBC Queens Tournaments where I competed with and met many of the top women pros.  I'm curious who the national champ was that you knew in the 80's.  It was a great experience for me then.  As for my current bowling, I'm a little bit past my prime. :-)  How fun would it be to have an Active Rain bowling tournament?

Jay - Bowling is a wonderful sport for children to get involved in.  My two boys started when they were around 5 years old.  Since my husband and I both bowled, it was a wonderful way for our family to be together.  We were coaches in the junior leagues and it's incredible to watch a lot of the children we coached continue to bowl today.

I  bowled like your friend did when I first started bowling but quickly changed to throwing a hook as it gave me a little more versatility on the lanes.

Wayne - Your dad must have been so proud of you to follow in his footsteps.   do you still bowl now?  The sport has evolved so much over the years with the new technology in equipment and lane conditions which opened up the door for women to compete on the same playing field as the men.

Liz - Thanks!  It is a proud and wonderful time for woman around the world who have such a wonderful role model like Kelly to look up to.

Bill - Does it show that much? :-)  My passion for bowling is tremendous given all the years I've been involved, the enjoyment I get from participating in the sport and more importantly when I had the opportunity to teach the junior bowlers of yesterday.  Those were some of the most rewarding years I had.
