I recently received this alert...animal lovers, please help!!  Sorry, for some reason I couldn't get the links to work.  Please go to peta.org and go to the related article (see bottom right corner), under action alerts) and respond!!

Dear Kristin,

PETA recently learned that students in an undergraduate neuroscience course at the University of Texas–Dallas drill holes into healthy rats' skulls, destroy portions of their brains with chemicals, and then inject them with amphetamines for behavioral experiments. The rats are then killed once the study concludes.

Fortunately, an expert-endorsed interactive computer simulator is available as a replacement for the use of animals in this cruel and crude classroom experiment.

PETA is now calling on you to help end these experiments at the University of Texas–Dallas.

Please send a quick e-mail to University of Texas–Dallas Dean of Undergraduate Education J. Michael Coleman, and politely ask him to work with faculty to replace this cruel study on rats with humane, effective alternatives that are available and being used in neuroscience courses at other universities.

Thank you for giving a voice to animals in need!

Sincerely,

Justin Goodman

Hi Kristin,

This is despicable. And I absolutely hate rats but, there is no justification for deliberately harming a living creature. Thanks for posting and making us aware of it.

Kris, I wonder if you were an animal in a past life.  Perhaps a pet?!?!?!?

I am almost sorry that I read this post since the subject is so horrible and tragic. Makes you wonder what the value of research like this is - Gee, do you think that they thought they would get a different result if you drill someone's skull open, poison their brain with chemicals, etc etc? why bother?

Rats may not be the most loved of animals, but I cannot imagine an enlightened soul who would want to do this - but then I answered my own question.

Lise, I know the truth about these things is hard to digest....I can't believe this inhumaneness is still around!

Hi Kristin,

Vivisection is deplorable!  Most people are not aware what goes behind closed doors in universities, colleges, etc.  It's wasting our tax dollars unnecessarily on useless experiments that torture animals. Our tax dollars  should be used elsewhere.  Thank you for posting about this and getting the word out to educate people.

When my son was abou 11, his cousin gave him a 2 pet rats for his birthday. I was, naturally, horrified. But Friskel & Squeakbert were so sweet. They were extremely intelligent and we taught them all kinds of tricks. We were in a camping club at the time and took them with us; we would walk around the campground with them on our shoulder: they got quite a bit of attention. I hate to hear about any animal being mistreated; even in the name of science.

Toni, what a nice story....I agree...I think we simply accept this mistreatment with the excuse of it being for the good of science, when in reality, there are so many simulators out there that work just as well, even better, and are cruelty free.  Thanks for the support!

The poor little creatures, as kids we experiment on animals in schools and as adults doctors experiment on us. That's why they call them practicing physicians, I don't like it one bit!
