For a lot of people walking into a Sushi Restaurant just isn't going to happen. I know people who cringe at the idea of even walking into a restaurant that serves sushi. But for those of us who like it, we know better. Yes, there was a time when I had to open my mind just far enough to accept the idea that raw fish might possibly have some good qualities - if I just try it.

First we all start off with a California roll and then a Philly roll or a cucumber roll. Then when we are comfortable with that we continue to challenge ourselves and broaden out what we might try. Unagi anyone?

The green movement is much the same way. I'm not here to force you to accept something you don't want. But I am here to ask you to open your mind just far enough to accept the possibility that there may be a better way to live.

  • Recycling pop cans is no big deal, approx 76% of Americans do recycle pop cans.
  • With the price of gasoline most of us plan our trips and errands.
  • Replacing light bulbs as needed with those new funny looking CFL's isn't a big deal.
  • Using borax for a insect killer is cheaper than the stuff you can't pronounce

When you are ready for the bigger stuff you'll know it. Start slowly and open your mind just a little bit! Before you know it you'll be asking for High Performance Houses, Passive and Active Solar, Geothermal systems and on and on.

I love Sushi!  I also love green!  This was such a neat post, and so true.  The more you learn the more it sucks you in and your interest rises.  Like moving on to Sashimi.  :) Mmm.  Think I'll go to Kobe tomorrow.

Ooooh, Dena, I do love sushi!  However, I can't quite do the raw egg thing yet, even if it is a pigeon egg.  I spent 10 days with a friend in Japan and got the real thing, and it is wonderful.  I am greening up quite nicely (not from the sushi!) but I wish I could get my husband to do it.  I come home to cans and bottles in the trash and have to fish them out.  (Sorry, that wasn't a pun, but I will leave it there...)

I am still working on him, but after 40 years, I don't know how much more of an impact I will have.

Dena - I had sushi for the first time about 18months ago and it was awesome! Unfortunately the place I had it in Ouray has closed so now I have to travel to get it.

We have a builder here doing green built homes and they look great. We also have the Dennis Weaver earthships and many passive solar systems. I think you're right by saying look into it. I dont' expect to learn it overnight, but it sounds like a viable option and a good one for resource usage.

For those who haven't noticed the Ecobroker behind my name, it's well worth the effort. www.ecobroker.com Tell them Dena sent you ; ) Someday Joanne is going to do it, I just know it in my heart. And Floyd I think you are the guy for the job in South Central Colorado!

Dena, I hope by now with all the attention it's finally received, people are finally doing the little things they can do to help the environment.  They are easy and inexpensive.  When I replace anything, I look for more natural products---they are better for you (they don't outgass) and now cost about the same.  I recently went to a carpet store, however, to replace part of mine due to the leak---very few were made from natural materials....That's a concern.  Thanks for the reminders.

Dena - I do love sushi and even converted a friend from calling bait to lunch! I am just starting to go green, and you're very right when it comes to little steps. One thing at a time and it all adds up.

I grew up in Oklahoma - and it was a meat and potatoes existence.  Even cooked fish was rare, let along raw fish -- sushi -- I love your analogy though.  When I moved to San Francisco, it was the first time I had even heard of sushi  -- and for sure I hadn't even thought of eating raw oysters  yuck!  However, little by little I did open my mind -- and I enjoy all of those things -- and simlarly I began down the green path in the same fashion.  You can't convince people to be "green" -- just let them take one small step at a time and discover the possibilities for themselves.

Dena,

I love Unagi. Of course, sushi is just about my favorite food next to Ceasar salad....I agree with you 100%. The EcoBroker designation has allowd me to have conversations with people about doing simple things and showing them one of thethings they definitely understand.

Even if they think that climate change is not real, they wan to save money and CFLs, good insulation and energy efficient windows, doors and HVAC systems allow them to do that.

Dena-  You are so right.  People don't like change very much.  Progress is made with baby steps.  I do a lot of volunteer work with the Sierra Club.  Many of our long time environmentalists get excited with new ideas and want to push too far too fast.  That make people resist the change even more.

Soon CFLs will be the norm, people won't give me strange looks when I talk about paint and VOCs, and everyone will have a green built home.

Thanks Dena...you make sushi sound so easy! I still have a problem with it! I always hang out in the grill side of Japanese Steak Houses, although I like my steaks medium rare -- so what is the difference with fish? I don't know although there is!

Great analogy. The more we talk about it and explain the better off we all will be. Jenny mentioned the Sierra Club. I was reading last night that their membership has increased considerably as of late! Great news!

Dena your mind is always working isn't it?  I like the analogies, but I don't eat sushi because I'm a vegetarian but I do eat the vegetarian version.  If we're to be  truely "green" we all need to stop consuming animals.  Animal husbandry is the biggest polluter of the environment world wide.

30 years ago it was apparent that "as Calif goes, so goes the nation" -- California enacted the first product liability laws to protect consumers in the 1960s. By the 1970s they were everywhere!

Funny! In the Liberal, EverGreen (Pun intended) State of Washington people love to open their minds to new things! Sushi is "so 5 years ago" here, and Green, well I'm a late arrival for that band wagon, but I'll be hopping on soon! I can't believe that someone wouldn't be interested in bettering our beautiful planet! Great post! :)

I have a friend who grew up in Pueblo, and family in Silt! I love Colorado. I'll be taking a trip down there this summer!

I am very interested in doing my part to make the environment better and to save the natural resources.  I am also trying to learn as much as I can because I am getting involved with a great project and I can't afford to look stupid. So Deena I hope you won't mind if I ask a question now and then.
