We've passed the 172,000 mark in AR membership, and I've noticed an interesting phenomonon with new Active Rain members that I don't remember seeing in the past.  It's a self-isolation of members who still post to their AR blog, but who have stopped commenting regularly on others' posts.

AR Principle:  Imitate Success

How do I know that?  I check your Points Summary from time to time to see what's successful, reasoning that if something's working for you, maybe it will work for me too.  I'm always looking for what works, and here's what I've found:

  1.  The most Active Rainers invite others to the party.  Did you know that bringing other Active Rainers on board will build up your ranking in the Rain?
To do this, click on STATES on the banner up top, see the pulldown menu, and click at random on any State or Canadian Province.  Choose the most successful Rainer in that State or Province, and on the left hand side of their Profile Page you'll see a link for Points Summary.  Click that link, and you'll see where all their points originated.  It's a profile of their Active Rain "life."
  2. The most Active Rainers interact with others regularly, and they're rewarded with new and potentially valuable relationships.  The reason this doesn't happen all the time?  Interaction in social media requires time.  Giving time to what I call my "Rain Life" requires discipline, and that's a word we don't hear much about in our "instant gratification" oriented society.

AR Principle:  Interact With Others For Referrals

Interaction is the basis for your business growth on Active Rain or any other socia media.  It's the basis for the growth of any relationship based on trust, whether business or personal.

I'm a member of a BNI (Business Networking International) chapter in Tucson, and we meet weekly specifically to refer business.  BNI taught me the value of creating relationships through interaction, and there are distinct steps to the process.  You can't skip the first two and hope to get the third.

  • VCP
    • Visibility:  Interact with me, and I'll remember who you are.
    • Credibility:  Interact consistently, and I'll come to know and trust you.
    • Profitability:  If we know, like and trust each other, we'll refer business.

Conclusion:  Balance your Active Rain experience for success.

Invite others to make the Active Rain Real Estate Network part of their business model.  Interact regularly with others on Active Rain.  Don't give up on posting, reading and commenting because you don't feel like doing it today.  Make it a discipline, and it will pay you back in spades!

I track my leads, and Active Rain accounts for half of my business referrals as a lender.  Not only that, but it also provides me with leads to refer out.  It's my most valuable resource.

Mike, you hit the nail on the head.  I'm starting to get better at this. Seem like there is more than I can handle.  Starting to look at it this way.  This is just like meeting someone at a networking event and only listening and not commenting.  Seems that would be a bit rude.

Hi Mike ~ As an AR Newbie, I am already amazed at the amount of terrific information I am able to access and learn from here.  At the very least, I will comment to express gratitude to whomever shares something that enlightens me...it's just good old-fashioned etiquette to me.  But moreover, I've also never been shy about expressing my opinions so I definitely look forward to engaging in some great conversations here and will hopefully help to enlighten others as well!

Great article Mike,

I agree with you 100%. I have blocked my calender to work on Active rain every week on Fridays. Do I follow it? NO. It stares at me on my calendar every Friday... One of these days I will HAVE TO sit down and just do it. I can not say enough about wealth of knowledge we can find here from other pros. I just love reading their blogs. It is just seems to be continuing education series on real estate related topics.

Thanks for reminding me to do the right thing to improve my business and gain knowldege.

Mike: You're a valued member with great advice. But I have to fess up, I've invited plenty of people and they don't want to join.  I look at it this way, more for me!  If they don't get it, fine, I do.  Newbies really need this advice and I'm glad your sharing your success stories.

Lyn,

There's a discipline to blogging that's part of the success equation.  Most in our society want the rewards without the discipline that it takes to achieve them.  I appreciate your comment!

Mike -- Great post. Good points made here. I realized this just recently and blogged about it. I received a "featured post" for my third blog. The power of the rain is a strong positive force to be recognized.

Thank you Mike,  I love reading the blogs and try to comment when I have something relevant to say. As a "newbie" my "expertise" is still limited, so have not yet started to blog, but am working on it and i appreciate your insights about invitations. Thank you and all for the education!

Great post, commenting is a discipline, as is writing a blog.  I feel like writing takes some inspiration, so I only do that when there is a pertinent issue on my mind.  But commenting sometimes gives me my next post.

Lanora,

Time blocking's good!

Richard,

It's the discipline thing that's hard to do, but after awhile it just becomes part of the routine.  Commenting's a GREAT source of blog fodder.

Lauren,

Newbies bring new life to the community and keep us oldsters from getting stale.

Michael,

Good job~

MaryBeth,

That's the attitude!  See you on your blog.
