Branding over knowledge?

I just sat through a seminar on branding.  For almost two hours I was told that branding is the most important thing for a real estate agent these days.  that it was far more important than knowledge of the business and years of experience.  They said with proper branding, anyone could be a top agent in their market.  Also, most methods of marketing used by the majority of agents was useless and a waste of marketing dollars.

Of course, they were trying to sell something, their services in marketing and branding.  I agreed that branding is important and that I probably have not made a strong enough effort in that area.  But, I disagreed with their overall message.  What are your feelings on this subject.  I'd really like to hear other agents opinions.  Also, what successful methods of branding have you used?

I help brokers build businesses they love.

Scary, scary, scary. If branding trumped knowledge McDonalds could sell real estate in the drive through: "would you like a McHouse to go with your McNuggets?" Hmmmm, maybe this does sound like some brokers!

Hi Jeff,  Too late to get your money back ?  Just kidding but it seems they were more interested in promoting their view than in helping you.

Great branding worked for Enron.  At least for awhile.  The seminar sounds like it promoted style over substance.  I'm too old fashioned and have too much German blood in me to believe that a good brand doesn't start and end with a good product or service.  (Dorothy learned that lesson when she met the Wizard in the Emerald City.)
