Tree on Woodlawn Estate in Alexandria VA

When I came across this tree on the Woodlawn Estate it reminded me of trees you see "come alive" in horror movies.

Woodlawn was built between 1800-1805 for George Washington’s grand-daughter Nelly Custis-Lewis on an original 2,000 acre home site.  The home on the estate was designed by William Thornton, who created the US Capitol.   Situated at the top of a hill known as Gray’s Hill the back porch of the home has a view of the Potomac River and was the first property owned by the National Historic Trust formed in 1951.  You can still tour the grounds and estate today and it is only a few miles for George Washington's home, Mount Vernon.

Hi Cindy:  Funny how we look at things.  I see a beautiful trunk that's lived through a lot....and will soon leaf out into its full glory!

Pat you might but then the beautiful mansion will pull grab your attention.

Kristin-I have a strange thing for old trees.  Love the way they look in all seasons but in the winter you can let your imagination run wild.

Kristin-I'll take another picture this spring when it is ready to shade the grounds for another year.

Gloria-you can see all the knots, twists and turns without the leaves.

Debi-it might be as old as the estate itself as it is huge.

Gerry-can't you imagine a child with that tree outside tap, tap, tapping on the window.

Gary-the history of the area adds to the story of the tree.

Hannah-thanks for stopping by.

Rich-Steven King is the master of horror films.

David-I used to climb trees similiar to this one as a kid.  Was great from hiding from my mom when she wanted me to come home for the evening.

Jeff-thanks for stopping by.  I'll have to find out if the tree is original to the property.  It certainly looks old enough.

Carra-we are fortunate to have a good deal of history in Northern Virginia.
