For years I have been splitting my home services between Verizon and Cablevision. Verizon has always had my phone lines in the house. Cablevision has been providing internet and TV programming.
Both companies have been hounding me to convert all of my services to them but I have not done anything….yet.
The Cablevision Optimum Triple Play program includes their basic internet service, a phone connection that utilizes the same cable and of course their cable TV. Their internet is not as good as it used to be. In fact, for about 14 months, I would lose the connection about once every half hour and of course their customer service dept claimed user error. Those issues seem to be corrected but what needs to be understood is that when you lose your cable connection, you would also lose the phone call at the same time if you happen to be on the phone. The Cablevision TV service is average. The quality could be better, the cable boxes are cheap and they do not have the NFL Network which for many people is a big deal. Cablevisions Triple Play has no contract and is month to month.
The Verizon Triple Play includes Fios internet, Fios cable TV and their home phone service. However, not all neighborhoods are wired for Fios (their best product). In those instances, Verizon will attempt to sell you on their DSL internet service and Direct TV. Both of those are inferior to Fios. The Verizon Triple Play includes a two year contract.
After hanging up the phone with both providers, I realized that I could save $50 per month vs what I am currently spending right now but I was a bit confused. It would be beneficial to hear from actual users about their experiences with both. So, I posted a question about both services on a NY based message board for sports fans. There are thousands of people in there so the responses came in quickly.
The majority (9 out of 10) were adamant that the Verizon product is MUCH better. I received responses that even if Cablevision cut their price in half, they would never go back. These were people who had experience with BOTH providers. One key takeaway from the responses is that I should NOT switch to Verizon until I can have the Fios product.
So, it looks like my best course of action would be to realize some monthly savings now and go with the Verizon Triple Play until Fios is available to me. Then, since there is no contract, I can flip to Verizon anytime in the future.
Hopefully this helped to provide some clarity for anyone else who happens to be thinking about making a switch.
