After weeks of speculation and excitement Apple has finally introduced its revolutionary new device - the iPad.

Internet, email, photos, video, iTunes, iPod, iBooks, maps, notes, contacts, and calendar.

This is all part of the iPad. It's thin, it's light and has up to 10 hours battery life.

And to make the the launch even more exciting, it's priced from $499 ....

Apple CEO Steve Jobs had this to say: "What this device does is extraordinary - the best browsing experience you've ever had. Way better than a laptop."

I find that the Apple Stores gives the best customer service.

Their staff are knowledable, helpful and seem to enjoy what they do.

B'bye, Kindle.  Hello, IPAD.   Cool.  Thanks for being so on top of it, Stewart.  I would expect no less.  BTW, I will email you later.

Stewart - The price is amazing when you consider that it offers so much more than the iPod touch.  I was hoping for a fully functioning Apple Tablet computer but I still view this as a grand slam home run product because of the price point.

The crazy thing about the Ipad is I heard the stock was dropping, this was mid-day and it was down 2%.  I would of thought it would of gone up.

Hi Stewart... If Apple is making it, it's gonna be a HUGE success.  And it looks like they priced this one amazingly competitively!

I doubt most MLS vendor gets on board with the iPad in the near future considering most haven't adapted to Safari yet.  However, I sure hope they do!

Apple comes out with tools that are so different from competitors, great products!

It is time for realtors to demand the MLS vendors are Mac compatible.  This could be an awesome tool-perfect for a realtor to use on the go showing clients houses.

As a former Apple Newtown owner, I've been waiting for this product for 15 years. YEAH! Can't wait to get my hands on one! Hope the browser based MLS works.

Stewart -

The video now comes up as not available due to a copyright claim by Apple.

Since they produced it, why would they object to it getting the widest possible net play?

Pretty dumb move for a smart bunch of people.

When it can replace both the computer and the phone, then it will be ground breaking.

Matthew Patrick

Hello Stewarrt,

Thank you for the blog that this device is out.  Apple definately has a way with asking what comsumers want by putting out products that are different.  But be careful.  Apple events are organized to get the maximum hype for each product, whether it is deserved or not.  Anyone remember the G4 Cube?  That one didn't sell well until two months before the product was canceled.

Now I know that I sound like a M$ Windows fanatic, I'm not.  I used Macs for years and only recently statred to use the crappy Vista OS because it supported a game I liked to play with my family.  But I have also worked for Apple in the past and understand how the game is played.

This product is designed to set up Apple's "Mall", for lack of a better word.  It drives it's users to three Apple stores, the Itunes store, the Apple App store, and now the Apple Book store.  Note that the OS, like the iPhone, is app driven.  Nothing I have seen so far has shown me that this iPad can be used to run a standard "stand alone" program like Office or OpenOffice to name two.  Now that does leave any HTML type program as a possibility like Google Docs, or the MLS.  But what happens if you are out of range of Wi-Fi?  What if you are not on AT&T or T-mobile's network?  No, Jobs did not mention AT&T by name, or T-Moblie at all.  Just read the Tech Specs, it supports EDGE, not CDMA data encoding that Verizion uses, or EVDO that Sprint uses.  That means that the 3G version is only useful when used with AT&T or T-mobile, and T-mobile is too slow or too sparse to be of real value.  Leaving only AT&T.

I don't want to put anyone off from buying or using an iPad, especially if it helps you.  I just want everyone to understand that Apple depends on a "reality distortion field" to generate hype, and obscure the true nature of the their products.  They have some of the best minds around when it comes to developing good, quality products that tend to last and stretch our perception of what something should be.  But they usually require you to fit into their mold on how something should be used.

Do your own research, find out if it will work for you.  Does it justify your time to adapt your routine to this new product.  If yes, then enjoy your cool new iPad.

I have this really amazing client and a few very close friends who are Apple empoyees, putting together these amazing new products.....

Once again kuddos to Apple..... And thanks to you for this posting. Maybe now... I may buy an Apple, this one may be my break away from the HP computer I have been relying on.

Have a great year!

I've really checked it out as I was excited about this.  I use my little laptop netbook (one of the first MSI's sent to the U.S.) on listing presentations and when traveling.  But I have to start it up and use my usb Internet stick which can be slow at times.

What bothers me the most about the iPad is that it doesn't play flash.  My two main websites have a flash slideshow on top and clients really like it and compliment me.  With the iPad the flash photo boxes would be blank.  Not a good presentation!  Similar products use flash so if I want to go this route I'll really have to do some comparison shopping, although I think I'll keep using my netbook for now.

Also, the $499 price is for the lowest amount of hard drive space and only has wi-fi capabilities.

11:02am • #22

You will all have to see whether your MLS is Safari compatible.  Otherwise the tablet is alive and well over on the MS side of computing life.  If you want a laptop replacement, try a convertible, if you want a netbook like replacement, try a slate type.

I have had three, bought the first one nearly 6 years ago.  I could be a mobile professional without it.

Not to rain on anybodies parade or anything Stewart and Clason #8 above, here might be some of the reason that Apple stock went down and in my opinion after trying the iphone it should plummet and not just drop.

You see I was so excited to be able to get the iPhone and could hardly wait, as I don't really treat myself all that much to high tech toys, mostly due to the high cost of them in the first place and certainly the iPhone fits in that catagory, wouldn't you agree?

Well, last Oct/Nov I finally decided to do it, to buy an iPhone since AT&T in my local area, unbelievably had the 3G network in place, so I made the plunge, bought the phone, paid the AT&T monthly fees, and then got some extras, as you always need some extras to go with your iPhone, right?

Well, in December I was in FL and all of a sudden the phone just won't turn on. I tried everything I could think of, but nothing and just to make a note here, I was there on business and not for fun, so there was no swimming, no beach, no boats, no water sports period and it wasn't dropped in any water anywhere either.

Since I was busy, I put it off and finally a couple of weeks ago I got the time to take it to the AT&T Corporate store where I purchased the phone and signed up for AT&T iPhone service and told them that I had charged the phone for two days and nothing was happening, so the gal at the counter asked if she could try and charge it for a while to see if she could get anything to happen, all the while, continously asking me the same basic questions over and over in varing ways to see if I had dropped the phone in "liquid" as she put it.

Now, I was getting a little bit put off, as I was feeling a little bit like I was being villianized here, as if I had done something to cause the phone to stop working, but just to give you an example, I have had my old trusty MOTO phone for about 4-5 years and it has never been dropped or gotten in "liquid" and neither had the iPhone, but the questions just kept coming, then after about a half hour, I finally went up to her and asked what was happening.

Well, she said, I was just trying to make sure it had enought charge, so I could test it and again I reiterated that I had charged it for 2 days already and nothing, so she calls Apple and talks to them, then, while doing nothing, gives me the number to Apple to call them myself to get it resolved, so I leave and go home, about 25-30 miles each way, I might add.

Once home, I called Apple right away and got a man that treated me like I was dirt, then transfered me to another man who did the same, only worse, if I might say so, then finally says he will give me a number to take along with the phone to UPS and UPS will know what to do with it, as long as I have the number he is giving me.

Now, I questioned him on this, as I had never heard of such a thing, but drove the 20 miles or so to UPS which I might add is only open from 4pm to 6-6:30 pm and gave them the number the Apple Support Employee gave me and she looked at me like I was crazy or something. So I retold her the story and she again gave me the funny look and said that she didn't have a clue as to what I was talking about.

Now, I was not just upset, I was mad.

The Apple employee had requested my email address so that I could work exclusively with him and when I got home, he had sent me an email okay and I shot one back to him to, letting him know that I was calling back and requesting to talk to a supervisor about the situation, then simply called back Apple support.

Told the lady that I got this time the story and she was shocked that I had taken the phone to UPS and gave me another number, which she said, was just a case number and that my phone was under warranty, but was going to send me a box to ship the phone back in for repair or replacement.

When the box comes, wouldn't you know it, it was shipping via Fedex and not UPS at all.

Boxed the iPhone up and a couple of days later here it is back with a note stating and I quote:

"A diagnostic evaluation has determined that the iPhone has internal damage related to a liquid spill or submersion, evident by the activation of one or more of the Liquid Submersion Indicators. The liquid indicators are located inside the dock and/or audio connectors."

Well, that was a real supprise, especially since the phone had never been in any kind of liquid period.

So now I am out the $500 or so for the phone, the service, the cost of some other items and nothing to show for it except a broken phone.

If you do a check on the net, you will find numerous stories related to problems with the iPhone, like liquid probems, broken glass problems and the costs to repair or replace is in the hundreds of dollars not small change.

So I guess what I am saying is that the company is not on the up and up from what I can tell, as they must have known about these possible problems when they started selling the phones, as from what I have read, there are 5-6 liquid spill indicators located within the phone and the stories go that if you are around even a misty night, it will set them off.

With the new iPad having a much larger glass screen than the iPhone and the one for the iPhone costing $200 or better, just how much is the one for the iPad going to cost and if you live anywhere near the beach, a lake, a river, in a foggy area, or go out into a misty night be perpared for your 'liquid indicators" to crack or whatever they do and you will simply be out all the money you spent on your iPad or your iPhone.

Yes, I am angry, wouldn't you be?

I told my sons to sell their Apple stock and it was at $214 and some change at the time and they are pretty happy now, as I told them that Apple must have some problems or are going to have some problems if this is the kind of service they give to someone who pays full price for their already, in my opinion, high priced products.

Okay, I am done for now, but unless you have money to throw away, I would, in my opinion stay as far away from the iPad as I could.

Maybe I'm missing something here, but from everything I've seen about it, it's nothing more than a bigger version of an Ipod Touch, which is nothing more than an iPhone without the phone.  So, if I can buy one of those, both of which will do everything an iPad will do AND they're smaller (less weight, less mass, etc), then why would I want to pay for an iPad?

I've heard far too many complaints about Apple products to get excited.  And most of my friends in real estate have changed to Windows because most real estate products (not just MLS) are designed with Windows in mind.  I think the iPad is too limited for real estate professionals who are keeping up with technology.  I think a Blackberry and my Hp tablet are way above the hype I hear about the iPad.

Besides after reading the New York Times article " The iPad's Name Makes Some Women Cringe" by Clarie Cain Miller, I wondered if Apple will stock it in the feminine hygiene aisle of the drugstore.  LOL

O.K. everyone, imagine showing up at a listing appointment with a "killer" Keynote presentation. You allow the client to swipe their finger across the screen to proceed through the presentation. Of course, because it is easy, you would pepper that presentation with the occasional movie, narration and music. Most smart clients today want their agent to be tech saavy. Do you think they would have any doubt after this presentation? Killer device if used for just that. It would pay for itself in the first listing!!

Hello Stewart - I was excited on Wednesday when it was revealed.  My hope was that this would be exacly what I needed.  But, after all the specs were released I think I'm going to wait to see what they come up with in the next iteration.  I really need to be able to run my inspection software and this one won't do it.

Great product for my kids and for adults who want to LOOK cutting edge. Not so great for the real estate professional trying to impress clients. Apple needs to let go of the notion that they are superior to MS. The reason MS has excelled for so long is that they combine function with fun. I have an iPhone and it's fun, but it still has not reached the hype that Apple wants us to believe. As a RE professional it was(is) impressive to connect your Palm Treo, or Blackberrry to your notebook and show presentations or listing information from the MLS. Apple and AT&T are trying to capitalize on every Minute, megabyte and app, that they have limited the full potential of the products and service they offer.  Until they have decided they are fat enough and begin to let these devices be all they can be we are left with nothhing more than a glamorus iPod with a 9.7 inch screen. Size doesn't equate to better. The iPad is a complete waste of money for a RE business professional.
