He forgot he was black?!

By

A few weeks ago I was one of the people who defended Harry Reid when he said Obama was "light-skinned" and with "very little negro dialect."  I have a pretty high tolerance for mistaken utterances and bad words.  As I often say, I've called my wife some pretty vile things, and I love her.

But now I have to call Chris Matthews out and I have to wonder why no one else seems to notice what Chris Matthews said. Matthews said that he forget Obama was black.

This slip of the tongue provides some real insight into the mind of Chris Matthews. Let's be honest, you never forget that Obama is black---half-black anyway---ever.  He's African American. What Chris Matthews really meant was there is something wrong with being black, but Obama was able to make us forget why it's wrong to be black.  When Chris Matthews reminded us that we forgot Obama was black, what he really meant was that we forgot that black meant something bad. This is one of the vilest racial comments I've heard on TV that I can remember.

Chris Matthews might have meant well and Chris might not be a bad guy, but this statement calls him out to me as a quiet racist. For my part I always prefer a blatant racist to a quiet racist. I like to know where you are coming from. I hate to have to find it out through careful study.

So, I have a little breaking news for Chris Matthews, most all of us---black or white, friend or critic---did not for one second forget that Obama is black---half-black anyway. Furthermore, supporters and critics alike don't think there is anything the matter with being black.

Obama is half-black. Get over it.

For me personally, the Matthews comment was one of the most offensive racial statements I've heard in some time. It was worse that Imus' "knappyhead" comments. It was worse that Trent Lott telling Strom Thurmond he would have made a good President. It was worse than when Biden said that Obama was "articulate". It was worse than anything Harry Ried said.

I'm not asking for Chris Matthews to resign.  But I do think he should be called out, because I think he needs to know why that was a pretty rotten thing to say. He thought he was complimenting Obama. But Matthews was way off base.

Is my outrage misplaced?

I don't think of Obama as black or white just another person who just happens to have the power to run my country.  In that context, I will periodically think in black or white terms when he says or does things that one would think favor a particular group.  For example, giving in politically to the Black Caucus.  Why do we need a Black Caucus expect to promote black issues.  That might be a time that I see his color.    I don't think much of Chris Matthews anyway, not because of his color, but that he is a terrible newscaster.

I'm getting a tingle running up my leg just thinking about what I'm going to write here! - And that is the problem. CM has made it clear that he is 110% in the tank for this President, but I have always been suspicious as to why. This isn't a comment about the pros and cons of the President. Most already know my views about the guy who currently occupies the Oval. This is about a journalist who has fallen so far from what he is supposed to be that it is truly shocking. I would not be remotely surprised if he ended up as Obama's Press Secretary before the President gets booted out of office in 2012. Anyway - let's deal with the main issue here. What CM was saying is simple. "I almost forgot he was black" means very simply that he sounded like a white President to CM. To me he just sounded like the President. He just looked like the President and I have never thought of him as a black President or a half black President - merely just an extremely inexperienced President with socialist and communist tendencies. A very close friend of mine truly hates the term "African American". To quote him directly. "I'm American! I have different experiences to other Americans and some of those differences are because of the color of my skin. But there are differences between Caucasian Americans who were born in New York City and those born in Montana." He continued his rant for quite a while. Is CM a racist? I don't think so, although to me Harry Reid clearly is. If I told my friend that I liked/disliked his "negro dialect" I'd probably get punched in the mouth for my trouble and I'd lose a good friend too. What CM is however, is chief cheerleader for a President in big trouble with the electorate. I think that he felt he was saying "look at this guy - he's as good as any white guy who's stood there". That does not make him a racist, it does however make him a moronic fool which now for the second time (refer to "tingles") he has exposed to the world.

I wish we were all color blind--that way when Chris Matthews, or Reid, or Biden utter something like the topic here, I'd know whether he's truly supportive or just patronizing.

Again, I ask of those who try to rationalize Matthews' remark, had it been Beck or Mitch McConnell who said it, would you be just as understanding?

Will, won't that question be perceived as a stereotype?  ;)

My mind becomes numb when we start this war of words.  Makes little sense to me.  Many of the differences we feel or see are cultural. Living in a community that is almost 50/50 white/black there are plenty of views to go around but we all live togeather as one of the Happiest States. Geaux Saints

Will - I am in complete agreement with you on this issue.  The only problem is that Mathews is from the left, and will be given a pass because he could not possibly be a racist.

Folks it is not a war of words, this is a good debate.  I'm glad we can all speak in a free nation about our beliefs.

ERIC - is that why Mayor Nagin called for New Orleans to be rebuilt as a "chocolate city" as "god intended"?

I forgot all about the Chocolate City...............What if a White person said, "Vanilla City"  OMG

Please enlighten us and & tell us how the White folks feel about the Mayor's comments to date.

I believe many white folks are paying to rebuild that city.

I do not believe I have read or heard one single report of harmony between blacks and whites or whites and blacks in New O.

Of course I'm hoping for the best for LA.

Obvious media bias.  When Imus or Trent Lott say something, they get attacked profusely and have to resign.  When Chris Matthews, Harry Reid, etc. say something the media basically ignores it.

The media - they all are in it for the ratings - dog eat dog - and whatever outdoes the last guys is fair play. Media is a business like all those businesses Obama berates as making too much money.

A fair analysis of who said what is impossible!

It was all over the news out here. The local stations played it over and over, CNN, Fox, MSNBC. It was in the newspaper, which I still read. I'm wondering why it didn't make the news in an arch-conservative state like Virginia. San Diego is pretty conservative, too.

I certainly don't think it was in the same league as Imus, Lott, Biden, or Reid. However, it does continue to show us that we've still got serious problems in this country when it comes to race, gender, sexual orientation, etc., most of it due to religious brainwashing.

Jim, "Most of it due to religious brainwashing"?!  That's a pretty nasty, unsubstantiated and unwarranted swipe at a whole class of people.  I guess in your head it's okay to attack people based on religion or politics, but it's not so good to attack them based on race?

Good post, I don't think the problem is as much racism as it is double standards. If Beck, Limbaugh, etc.... would have said the same thing, people would be screaming!!!
