Intro To Video Blogging

Video blogging is here to stay.
It is the new social media marketing and there is an unlimited potential to climb the search engines with video blogging since Google has is working on developing ways to read the video and rank it. They are always evolving their algorithms.  I hired a coach to help me with my video blogging and we are working on some amazing projects that we plan to roll out this year.

We added video blogging to our 2010 business plan. Our goal is to be actively engaged in video blogging.

I much prefer to write my posts so of course,
that is not going to go by the wayside but we are fully embracing video blogging as an additional option for viewers and searchers.

Eileen Hsu invited me to join her video blogging group on Active Rain. We are challenging each other to pick it up a notch and just start posting our video posts. When I write a post, the words just flow naturally and I can go back and correct the words easily. Video blogging is much more transparent because if you are like me, you don't have time to sit at the movie editor all day long trying to get it just right and re-filming over and over again because you made a funny face, touched your nose or licked your lips. Talk about transparency! I tend to just post it all RAW! If I had to make it perfect, it would never get uploaded!

I even pronounced Eileen's name wrong in my Intro to video blogging post below. I know how to say her last name, but it just did not come out right. Oh Well! You are going to get to hear and see all my mistakes! That is just the way I am going to embrace myself and video blogging.

Don't go too hard on me. I am really not looking for criticism because I went to broadcasting school many moons ago for a short time so I know what I am doing wrong. I am too close to the camera, my fat chin is too obvious and there are tricks I can use to hide the chin thing going on. I am harder on myself than you will ever be.

What I wanted to show you here is to just get started video blogging about something, anything, to start getting comfortable with the process. I am using my Mac book pro webcam in these videos and then I added the titles and transitions in IMovie- which I love! There is so much more you can do in the movie editing section but again, I will do a little at a time. First, I need to just do the basics to get used to that and then as I get faster and faster we can start jazzing it all up more and more.

Please sign in to your YouTube account, then watch my video, rate my video with the star rating below the video, then favorite the video and add a comment. These are just a few of the tips to get videos to climb the ranks of YouTube. Google likes the YouTube videos that are highest on the YouTube channels.

OK! So here is lesson learned!

ALWAYS, check your video settings in youtube and log out of youtube, then go to your active rain post and make sure you can click on the video!

When I uploaded the video directly from Imovie on my macbook pro- it asks if you want to upload it public or private- I thought I pressed the public option, but I obviously did not.

After I drafted and posted the post with the video here on active rain, I pressed play on the video and it worked for me, but that was because I was signed in to my OWN youtube account! So we can not assume everyone else can see the video.

When I logged out of youtube and tried to view the video I saw what you saw, that is was set to private.

So I went back to youtube and sure enough, I had uploaded it as a private video much to my dismay!

SO that is the lesson for today!

Elizabeth-

When I do the webcam video like this one, the camera is still because the laptop is still. Same from the Imac.

Now when I do my moving video- I use a APPLE NANO which is remarkably still. It is so small it is easy to keep still, you can also use a tripod. But the best thing is that IMovie has a stabilizer tool to get rid of wobbles:)

Katerina,

I will have to get comfortable seeing myself on camera.  I am planning on using video for some messages to different people this year so maybe this will help.

Hey Katerina, Good video, very informative if someone wants to get into video blogging with Mac Book Pro. For the video masking, i am wondering if you have a solid background color (maybe drap a solid bedsheet or a cardboard) opposite color of your hair/outfit, that may help the computer to mask it in a more clean fashion. try it out and let me know how that goes, let's keep each other accountable for some video blogs!

Katerina, I have been doing  a lot of videos but have only used my web cam on my Mac for birthday videos on Facebook. I never like the quality of the video and I am wondering if there is setting in my Macbook that I might have missed because my web cam video are not as clear as yours is.

I'm so glad you made it viewable. It originally asked me to sign in onto Youtube. Like you, I'm much better with words than I am with Video. Every video I put up there was recorded at least 10 times. I'm starting to do better.... 3-5 times.

I like the introduction of video blog on my website. They can hear me, as if I'm talking with them. I'm not sure, but I think that's also the reason why they are calling me.

Katerina,  I always imagined you with a Russian accent.

Those Mac books are pretty neat.  I can't believe they've made it so easy to do those backgrounds.  Doing a green screen used to be a big deal.

As you wrote, doing video is tough because you're always going to mess up in some fashion and it's a pain to try to edit things out. But it's a great exercise to evaluate your videos and look at yourself as others do.  At first it's very difficult.  You start to cringe at some of the things you see yourself doing.  But awareness is the first step to correct something.

Tim- Yep, I am my own worst critic too! I see all my silly facial gestures. Well, I now have a list! I am sure that with practice it will improve. Like I tell my kids, just do it and then do it again, work on making it better, and do it again.

Keterina,  the best way to use those backgrounds is to have something fairly solid in color and of a high contrast.  In your case, becuse of the blonde hair and light skin, a darker background should work well.  Now, if you REALLY want to get into the whole video blogging thing, go check out boinxtv.com.  This is some seriously cool software for video blogging on the Mac.

Monika, the biggest factor for quality video is decent lighting.  Most people have a computer on a desk that is against a wall, and the light in the room is in the center of the ceiling, behind you.  This will cause the camera to have to balance the image between you and the bright light behind you.  This leads to dark, grainy images of you.  I would suggest either putting some sort of light in front of you, or if it's a laptop, spin around somehow so that the light in the room is hitting your face and the camera is shooting away from that light.

Hope that helps!
