The Standard & Poor's/Case-Shiller Home Price Index released statistics showing San Diego County as one of only four metropolitan areas that had an increase in prices in November 2009 compared to November 2008. The other three were Dallas, San Francisco, and Denver.
The Index is a three-month rolling average of single-family resale homes involving the same property over time. It was set at 100 for January 2000, and in November 2009, it stood at 156.06 for San Diego County, meaning that homes here are selling for 56% more than they did in January 2000.
It proves once again, I believe, that as a long-term investment, it's hard to beat real estate. It's when you think of real estate as a short-term investment or as a cash machine to finance new cars and vacations that you get into trouble.
When buying a home, think long term!
