Speechless Sunday: Red Rock Canyon Near The Arizona Sonoran Desert Museum

Red rock canyon in Tucson Mountain Park

Sedona's not the only place in Arizona with red rocks.  This little canyon is hidden away in a wash next to the Arizona Sonoran Desert Museum.  I could hear tourists talking in the parking lot above me, but they couldn't see me, and had no idea of the beautiful canyon below them.  The setting sun lit up the saguaros above.

Mike you always seem to catch the perfect lighting. Just gorgeous warm colors and very cool subject manner (I still collect rocks).

Don,

It's my pleasure to do that!

Debi,

Panasonic Lumix w/10X optical zoom, Leica lens.  $240 or so at Costco.

Leah,

...and Colorado means "red" in Spanish.  Thanks for commenting!

Cynthia,

You're a rockhound?  Have you ever blogged about that?

Jo,

This same canyon has another wall that's a deep yellow/brown.  I'm hiking later this week with a geologist friend because he wants to see it.

Bill,

It's there if we look for it, isn't it?

Dorie,

Thanks for stopping to comment!

Magnificent colors.  One could certainly not confuse this with any other state in the U.S.

That's really pretty.  Funny how it's hidden right there in the parking lot.  Probably best that way, too many feet would tear it up.

Joanie,

Southwest Airlines can make your wishes come true.  So can American, Delta, and US Airways.

Doreen,

When it rains, the watershed of dozens of square miles funnels through this narrow canyon.  The rocks are worn smooth at the bends in the meandering wash.

Ann,

Don't wait for summer!  LOL

As a potter, I have to ask does red rock also mean that there is great red clay in those hills for pottery?????

Patricia,

I didn't see a soul down in the arroyo.  (And I like it that way...)

BarbaraJo,

There's no red clay, only hard caliche.  Thanks for commenting.
