Fort Lewis, Defender of Liberty - - -

As soldiers come home this year, we have the opportunity to assist them in reconnecting with life back in the states. It is an honor to give great service to the men and women who serve this country and defend our liberty. Ft. Lewis Washington State

The local base highlighted for this article is Fort Lewis, in Washington State. Fort Lewis is our premier military installation in the Pacific Northwest. Fort Lewis is the station for several of our nation's top military units now serving to protect our country.

Olympia CapitolFort Lewis is located between the State Capital of Olympia and Tacoma. Built on 87,000 acres, Fort Lewis was created in 1917, and as you may have guessed was named after Meriwether Lewis of the Lewis and Clark expedition. Fort Lewis has over 40,000 soldiers and civilian workers, 120,000 retirees and more than 47,000 family members living both on and off the base.

Deschutes River

A good area to search for housing is Puyallup, to the northeast of the Fort Lewis base. Puyallup, offers lower cost housing opportunities, yet provides a solid neighborhood spirit with all the amenities one would want.

Puyallup is home of the Western Washington Fair, continually ranked as one of the ten largest fairs in the world.  Puyallup is a short commute to the base and a great jumping off point to the outstanding recreational opportunities on Mt. Rainier.

Recreation and educational opportunities for family outings are in abundance around Fort Lewis. We've found Olympia particularly enjoyable, including the historical perspectives at the Capitol Campus and wonderful walks along the Deschutes River (translation: River of the Falls), and the many parks along its banks throughout its urban meandering. This river walk is one of my favorites.

Frank, Thanks for making things easier for those who serve.  Our son got out of the Army this last June.  He is now a college student and it has been a struggle getting his GI bill in a timely fashion.

Marchel, we all need to do everything we can to assist our military. It is a shame your son is in a struggle. I hope that ends soon. If there is anything we can do, please let us know. Thank you for your comment.
