Good Grammar doesn't end in grade school...or does it?

Bloggers on AR talk about spelling and grammar errors frequently. We all agree it's important to to avoid making errors, but the problem is, we don't know when we make them!

Errors occur also, because many times the message is not proof read. I for one get in a hurry or fool myself into thinking what I see on the screen is right! Yes, I should wear glasses to work on the computer, but I don't always do...thus errors crop up.

Not knowing when an error is made, is partly due to forgetting, or never knowing the proper usage.

Here's my killer, tell me which one is correct:
1) Its been a long time since I went to school!
2) It's been a long time since I went to school!

Now be honest...which one did you pick?
#1 or #2?

Here's a spelling test for you:
Is it;
1) alright
2) all right

Here's another (I do this wrong ALL the time...)
1) alot?
2) a lot?

If you are curious about learning more, there is a great new blog here. Robin Nobles writes articles on grammar and creative writing, she's a great resource for finding new ideas and becoming a better writer.

Now for those of you (me included) that would like to improve on writing and grammar skills there is an online test that will help do just that.

Now I know I will never be a letter perfect writer, but with practice maybe I will succeed in getting my point across without making a fool of myself.

The answers to the questions above are #2.  What did you guess?  Were you positive your answer was right?

My rule for both writing and golf.  Do it well enough as to not embarrass one's self.

Sometimes is like being in high school again reading some of the posts--both for content and grammar/spelling! -Charles

Kristal, an English teacher would have a field day with my blogs. I am the world’s worst speller and my grammar is even worst. In my fist year of school I was asked to spell "a" I spelled it "ae" just like it sounds. Enough said, but I can add and subtract real good.

As a former teacher, I shudder to think if its (or is it it's?) right when it's (or is it its?) especially when it's in a contract!

Kristal,

I have to admit spelling errors (at least the ones that jump right out and smack you in the face) drive me up the wall.  I saw some the other day... witch, instead of which.  Weather, instead of whether.  I can handle the spelling errors where it could be because some of us type too fast for our own good.  But come on, use the right word.  Sorry, done venting.

As for grammar, I can hardly remember when to use what mark.  Is it a colon or a semi-colon?  Am I supposed to use a comma here or not?  Thank God for spell check and grammar check when we need to write those really important documents.

Well Bryant beat me to the punch, so I won't do that.  If you are going to blog on a regular basis, and it is more than a couple of lines, try typing it in word, use the spell check, and then copy and paste.  If you are posting a public post, you will come off more professional.  My spelling and grammar is pretty good, but my fingers tend to not like hitting the right keys. .

How we write, how we speak, and how we present ourselves are all part of our professional image. The care we put into these areas will help carry us to success.

I hope you knew all that without having to do any research Kristal. Had all the links in your memory, along with the correct spelling.    I hope you were able to write that by just pulling it out of your.... but if you had to research it, thanks for sharing it with all of us.

Robin's blog looks interesting and she has a picture of Sara Lipnitz on it.

Sadly, just this week, I received an email from the president of the PTSO at my son's school asking me to join some comities.  Later, I saw a plano that bragged that the home had "brand new wood floor's!"  Wull as long as I'am an perfessionul I guess its OK.  Yikes.

KK, correct spelling has always been one of my pet peaves.

MM who is Robin???

KK That photo is magical.

As for grammar, I try.  I break the rules in my writing, but I know I am breaking them...   Like stating sentences with But and And.  My English teachers would be rolling over.

It’s alright (both seem to be accepted by my spelcheckorJ, which I use a lot), ‘though I’m not bad at spelling & grammar, I compose off line, and rely on the (sometimes not so reliable) spelling and grammar checker feature of MS Word. Common errors I see: there, their (often misspelled as “thier”) & they’re; to & too, but rarely conflated with two, and all the others mentioned in the above comments.

I look more at the content, than the spelling, perhaps ‘cause I know a number of dyslexics—very bright people, who can’t spell well—and often spell-check won’t catch the errors.

I certainly don't ignore content because of spelling and grammar errors, but I do notice them. It's all part of your branding. Composing in Word does offer both spelling and grammar help.

Here is one my husband uses. I love you allways, always. This a nive thing to here. I like that he thinks in on bothways.

Jacqulyn/Charles I think we all can press for improvement.

Ray, you get a "pass".  I know English is not your first or only language.  I admire you for what you do! I wish I were bilingual.

George, In our business math is probably more important than spelling.  At least Google has a spell checker, I don't think it has a math checker...yet!

Bryant, My dear Broker Bryant, my how your spelling has improved!  You now must start using more commas!  :)

Jason, the spelling stuff and mixed up words gets pretty bad sometimes.  I think we are all going too fast for our own good.  (including me for sure!)  Grammar was always a  mystery to me and still is.  I'm lucky to be able to Google my hubby on this, he's very good!

John Novak, Communication is certainly the key to success.

Maureen, Research?  My, I thought that was your department!  Aren't you the official AR resource Library of all things researchable?  Being one of the top 10 bloggers in the Universe, I bow to your knowledge and power.  Lipnitz photo?  Oh you must mean the Brainy one!

Michele, Don't look now, but I think your Mom spelled your name wrong!  (Don't worry mine did my name wrong too!)

Rich, Spelling incorrectly is like a bad penny.  :)

MF, You had English teachers?  (just kidding...really!)  Glad you like the photo, I froze my fingers getting it at 0-dark-30.

Jay, Never fear, my Mother always said, "if you don't know more than one way to spell a word, you aren't creative."

Christine, Your husband is a wise man. (but you knew that!)

OK, was that a test?  I wasn't going to call you on it.

Thanks for the post. People judge us by the way we speak and write. Bad grammar and spelling might be acceptable in some areas, such as text messaging, but not for real estate professionals.

Hi Kristal-

Thank you for a great post! Right or wrong, judgements are made about individuals based on their writing capabilities. If it is the only impression others have of you, it is important that your writing represents you well. Being articulate and well spoken, especially in the written format reflects well on us as professionals.
