HELP! I Have a Typical A/C Unit in FL--For How Long will FREON Be Available??

HELP!  I have a typical Air-Conditioning system in FLORIDA and I just found out the government is doing away with production of my A/C refrigerant!  Technically, they are PHASING OUT the use of my A/C refrigerant.  This is a great thing, protecting the environment and contributing to CLEANER AIR.  Woo hoo!  I'm all for it!  I like being "green" and making sure there is a healthy planet here for my children and grandchildren.  It only makes sense to do things that promote a cleaner environment.  So, by the way, HOW MUCH is my new A/C unit for my house going to cost me, once all the current FREON is gone and can no longer be imported?  Will there be government incentives for the purchase of the new units, like the Tax Credits we see currently?

Okay--so you just bought your new-to-you home and it has a wonderful HVAC (we'll say A/C or Air Conditioning) system in it.  You're happy!  You're excited!  You know your A/C is 13-SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating) because your home inspector and real estate agent both pointed that out to you.  You know it works and that it works efficiently because you had it inspected and the system pulled through with flying colors!  Yippee!

But, in truth, you're already WAY BEHIND in what's happening with A/C systems if your A/C system uses HCFC-22 or R-22, more commonly referred to as FREON.  Freon is a HCFC/Hydrochlorofluorocarbon and is damaging to the ozone, thereby contributing to global warming.  According to the EPA/Environmental Protection Agency, Freon is the "refrigerant of choice for residential heat pump and air-conditioning systems."  And don't worry, the government is allowing us to import Freon until 2020, so it'll still be available until then.  But, that's only 10 years away now...

What EVERYONE that owns a home in Central Florida needs to know is that our government is PHASING OUT A/C systems that use FREON/R-22/HCFC-22.  CHANCES ARE, YOUR HOME AND YOU WILL BE DIRECTLY AFFECTED BY THIS PHASE-OUT.  As Freon is phased out, other more environmentally-friendly refrigerants are being introduced.  This is great!  And, how much am I going to have to pay within the next 10 years in order to buy a new A/C unit?  And, are there going to be any Tax Credits for me to do this?  I sure hope so because I bought a new FREON A/C for my house about 3 years ago.  It works fine but, I guess, is helping to KILL the environment, stink up the air, and contributes to global warming.  Ouch!  Plus, I paid for a super-tricked-out and wonderful TRANE unit that cost me $5,205 for that as-of-today OBSOLETE unit.  I hear the newer, safer A/C units will be even more expensive, the cheapest of which start at about that price.

So, prepare to say GOODBYE to your current A/C within the next 10 years or so (unless it dies before then) and prepare to pave the way for a new buddy to cool you during HOT Florida days!
