I keep writing about how the Big South Fork is rugged country and trail riders in the backcountry need to be prepared for any eventuality. I personally have never had a problem but I try to think of what emergencies might occur and to be prepared to deal with them.
Cell coverage is iffy-so you can't count on being able to use your BlackBerry. I carry a small device called "SPOT" that performs several functions and can be relied upon because it uses satellite communication. It's the first and only satellite messenger.
The SOS/911 function would be used in the event of a life threatening or other critical emergency to notify emergency services of your GPS location and that you need assistance. The GEOS International Emergency Response Center alerts the appropriate agencies, contacting 911 responders in North America….but if the helicopter is going to be launched, it had better be a bona fide emergency!
In the event of a non-life threatening emergency, you can use the HELP function to notify your personal contacts that you need assistance. SPOT has partnered with national service providers to offer non-life threatening assistance; these additional services can be purchased and programmed to your HELP button… but I don't see us needing the National Ski Patrol or the Coast Guard.
The CHECK-IN/OK feature allows you to let your friends and family know that all is OK with a pre-programmed message, along with your GPS location. With a push of a button, a message is sent via email or SMS to up to 10 pre-determined contacts…to let them know that you're lost and will be late… and your waypoint is stored in your SPOT account for later reference….in case you stay lost! Sure beats spending the night in the woods, eating bark and berries.
The TRACK PROGRESS feature allows you to send and save your location, and allows contacts to track your progress in near real time using Google Maps. With this trail of "bread crumbs," they can see where you were, where you are…and where you need to be!
This handy device is inexpensive and easily purchased online. It's the annual fee that drives the cost up but, if you need it, it's PRICELESS! It's appealing to anyone working or recreating in a remote area.
