South Jersey Wildlife: Red-Tailed Hawk

Red Tailed HawkI love taking pictures of wildlife local to my home in Gloucester County, NJ. So I am going to start a running series when I come upon new "local residents". I've leaned mostly towards birds, but will not be able to say "no" to the turtles, deer, crawfish, and others.

Red Tailed Hawks are common throughout America as well as north and south of the borders. When hunting, they make a more gentle, methodic swoop down to capture prey, which I was able to witness. However this time he came up empty-handed.

Red Tailed Hawk South JerseyI'm not sure if the first two pictures are a different bird or not. They look like two different birds to me.

The majority of these pictures in this series will be taken in my back yard. So if you are located in Gloucester County or South Jersey feel free to add your own pictures below (just please size them right).

I see them behind my house occasionally here in Northern Delaware. I occasionally hear an owl too in the very ealry morning or late at night, but have never seen it. Love seeing these creatures. We see bald eagles a lot when we're down on the Chester River, that's really cool to see their grace. Thanks for sharing Steve

Wayne - THanks

Dave - I rarely see the bald eagles around here. I did one day while driving the highway. It was indeed a very cool sight. I'm lucky I didn't crash!

Bill - I think so. They are common, but still pretty cool.

On the drive home this morning I saw two on the opposite side of the field, so I suppose they are two different birds.

They look like different birds but then they could be of different ages as well.

Steve - looks to be a fun and informative series. We have them here, too. They often nest up in the eucalytpus trees and fly through the yard after other birds.

Steve, I, too, am a lover of wildlife...don't forget the rabbits and squirrels! Claude is somewhat of a wild life enthusiast, so I learn a lot of different calling techniques that they (the wildlife) has amongst themselves, through him.

Jane - Funny you should mention such - The most squirrels I ever saw at once in my back yard was TWO. I usually only have one squirrel and he makes out like a bandit with my walnut tree.
