In Minneapolis in the winter time we get hoar frost.  I have attempted to find out why it is called that, but all I get is scientific information as to what it is.  On our clear nights soft ice crystals form on vegetation or any object that has been chilled below freezing.  It can be so thick it appears to be snow.  It appears to be a winter wonderland as the fine feathers or needles or spines, whatever you want to call them, decorate the landscape.

These mornings become a hey day for those who like to take pictures.  You walk the lakes and parks of Minneapolis and can take photo after photo of the enchanted land that has been created.  Many of us do not have to go past our front yard to experience this beauty.  The weather on the news tonight will show many pictures that were taken by citizens today.  As the breeze comes up, the spines blow in your face.  It tickles you and brings laughter to you as you walk along.

These mornings of hoar frost are  a treasure and just underline why it is fun to live in Minneapolis.  Why we sleep mother nature paints a different picture for us.  We might have sunshine, big snowflakes, or the spines of ice crystals as they form on our plants to greet us in the mornings.  It is that old story of man vs. nature.  Nature will always do what she has to do.  We have learned to go with the flow and dress for the day.  Today the dress was a lighter coat and our skin could be exposed to the air.  No wind chill to threaten the skin today.
