Fulton County BuildingAtlanta GA - Fulton County Homestead Exemption rises in 2010 & 2011!  Residential real estate that is used as one's primary residence qualifies for a Homestead Exemption in Fulton County (and other counties) in Atlanta, GA.  The great news is the exemption amount in 2010 is going up to $25,000 from $20,000 in 2009.  For 2011, the exemption amount will increase to $30,000!

If you are already receiving this exemption, you do not need to reapply unless there is an ownership change.  If you bought your home last year or earlier, to qualify, you must own and occupy the property as your primary residence as of January 1st, 2010 and be a permanent legal resident of Fulton County GA.  Additionally, you are required to present a valid Georgia photo identification and provide a current copy of your Fulton County vehicle registration.  If you have any questions, you can visit their website!

If you go to the website, you can download and mail a basic homestead application utilizing the instructions on the reverse side of the form.

Most important date: April 1st, 2010 is the deadline to file for homestead exemption in the current year and Property Tax Return!

This is a simple and easy task to save some money.  Please make sure you take advantage of this opportunity.

Have you claimed your exemption today?

Michelle - this seems rather low for a homestead exemption. Is this like a 'credit' or something.  We don't have anything like this here in AZ.

Anna,

It is a credit, but they take the overall value and assess you 40% of the value.  This exemption is then taken off the 40% number.

Example.  Home valued at $500,000 would be viewed as $200,000, so $25k tax exemption, bringing it to $175k is good.  If you home is very expensive, it's worth less in proportion, but same in actual dollars credit!

I know every area is different.

All the best, Michelle

Michele...Nice idea to lower property taxes a bit.  I didn't know a homestead exemption was related to property taxes.

Carra, Yes, now we just hope they keep the milage rates the same, so they don't increase it that way!

All the best, Michelle
