Harry Potter And The Vague Resemblance... To Real Estate :-)

By

Hi All,

My Mel and I took some time out today to go see the latest Harry Potter film "Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix".  I had looked forward to seeing this picture for weeks as I am a big Harry Potter fan.

I was actually planning on being in line at the bookstore on June 20/21 2003 when the book this movie was based upon was being released but June 21, 2003 was my wedding day and cooler heads prevailed keeping me from wiling away my final single girl hours in a bookstore surrounded by 12 year olds.

Anyway, I went to see this movie and I was struck by something... This film reminded me of how some folks practice Real Estate.  No I don't think there is a Voldemort of Realtors, however I do sometimes see a vague resemblance to the Ministry of Magic where the Board is concerned... but I digress...

For those who have read the HP books they know that JK Rowling goes into great detail crafting each and every scene, character, plot device and moment that you spend in her world.  There really is no such thing as a throw-away character as all of them seem to be so fully fleshed out.  Each book builds upon the previous one and also incorporates all of the new information with the old.

The movie however, is like the Cliff's notes version of the book, except it was clearly not written by Cliff.  In order to understand the film you really need to have read the book.  But if you have read the book you probably won't be thrilled by the film.

As Real Estate professionals I think we sometimes have a tendency to approach our audience like the filmmaker approached his.  We sometimes spend to much time talking about things they don't care about and not nearly enough time explaining things that may become critical knowledge in the days or weeks to come.

We need to remember that not everyone has read the book, and even if they did, they may not have taken what we assume they took away from the experience.

When we introduce a character like Title, Escrow, The Lender or The Appraiser, we need to remember that even though we know who they are, what powers they possess and where they fit in the script that is a sale our reader or client does not.  We need to give them more than a passing nod, especially if they will become critical in days to come so that clues to how things are going are not missed while we all stand about gazing lovingly at something meaningless but shiny.

And most importantly, we need to be willing to take the time necessary to fully explain the story as a whole and not just hit the high points in the interest of brevity.  Otherwise the transactions we do will run the risk of being for our clients what the viewing of this film was for me... A greatly anticipated event that wound up leaving me feeling unfulfilled and bearing only a vague resemblance to its source.

Take care all, help lots of people and have a wonderful day!

It is a great comparison- I agree.

Bu tin the terms of the Order of the Phoenix- That was the disappointment of the year.

I love all of the HP books and films but this was so off to her usual work.

Off the cuff, this should be Featured!  Tisza, I'm so impressed by your writing acumen....

"We sometimes spend to much time talking about things they don't care about and not nearly enough time explaining things that may become critical knowledge in the days or weeks to come."  I'm still trying to overcome that in my writing in regards to Real Estate, well put, well written.

Hi All,

Cait - I think that is a great idea... in fact I think it is such a great idea that I have done that very thing :-)

Maureen - I had a hard time with this one as well.  I kind of felt that it was sort of the reverse of the Dragnet tagline, in this case the names were kept the same and everything else was changed to prevent understanding.

Jason - That is very kind and all I can say is from your lips to the AR Gods ears :-)

Take care all, help lots of people and have a wonderful day!

Great analogy Tisza...I've never seen any of the HP movis, nor have I read the books...I guess I kinda look at HP as kid's stuff :)  I'm not a big movie go'er...I went and saw "Amazing Grace" earlier this year, other than that the last time I went to the movies was in 1998 (?) when I saw "You've Got Mail"....Happy anniversary this Saturday!

Love the HP movies and books - read 'em all and just saw the Order of the Phoenix this week. The movies are always abut 2/3 of the content of the books (or they'd just be too long) so things are lost but still they're a lot of fun.

I think some clients want tons and tons of detail, and others want almost none. I try to educate my clients so they fully understand what they're doing, and I agree with you that that is the BEST way to go. But some clients just haven't got the interest or patience or whatever to be bothered. It kills me when clients say "just tell me where to sign" and I have to drag them through at least some of the highlights. Not ideal but sometimes it's all you can get them to do.

Tisza-

I just wanted to say Congrats on finishing the competition.  It was a pleasure getting to know you and am in awe of your talents.  I would say something corny like "I wish you the best" but it is pointless.

Go get 'em girl.

Much love

Hi All,

Mary - I understand what you mean about thinking that the Harry Potter series is kid stuff.  That is what I thought for the longest time myself.  I avoided reading the books until just before book four came out.  I picked up book one filled with skepticisim read the first few chapters and that was that.  I was hooked and I don't read fiction.  Glad you liked the analogy.

Mary - Funny thing, lately you and Mary Warren always seem to post comments one right after the other.  You two must be on the same wavelength.  As for the idea and the comparison, well first there was the title and then you know what happens next... It is frusterating when you are trying to do what is right and what is best and they won't let you.

Take care, help lots of people and have a wonderful day!

I think that we as realtors/appraisers tend to forget that the average person does not deal with real estate matters on a daily basis. It is always a good idea to explain things in detail to those we represent. Great post, Tisza.

Tisza,

Great post.  Our mundane is someone else's confusion.

And I love the Ministry of Magic reference.

My first AR blog was about serving first-time buyers, and I wrote:

"Take time to REALLY grasp if your clients understand.  Have them tell you what you said, so you can see if they have it or if it is all going past them.  Remember buying your first home; signing a ton of papers that were thrust in front of you and wondering "What the heck am I doing?"  Try to reduce that confusion in your clients.  They'll love you for it."

You said it well.

Keep up the good work, including posting beore midnight..

Hi Mike,

Glad you enjoyed this. You gave excellent advice as well.  I am actually going to try to make an effort to post before midnight more frequently.  But, as they say the best laid plans...

Great to hear from you.

Tisza - you are right that Mary Warren and I have this funny habit of posting close in time to each other. Really weird and not on purpose!!

Hope your Post Project Blogger week is off to a great start.

Tisza, it is true that we often treat clients like they "should have read the book." We tend to forget that what is commonplace with us is Greek to buyers and sellers!

I love the HP books and just like the Harry Potter movies! They need to let us edit those things - we could do tons better - Just my opinion, of course!

Hi All,

Mary - Funny how those things sometimes work out... The week was going along swimingly, but late last night I hit a heck of a speed bump.

Sandra - I agree, I find the movies to be something that in my mind has about as much to do with the story as the book "Scarlett" had to do with "Gone With The Wind".  I would love to see them actually make a mini series out of the books and put every creeping, crawling thing up there on the screen.  Sure it would be a bazillion hours long, but wouldn't it be fun to watch :-}

Take care, help lots of people and have a wonderful day!

Tisza, well spoken. Not everyone practices as a "consultant" in this business.

Darn, you spoiled the movie for me. I have to get another client before I can go ;-}
