Andy Rooney

Three Little Words That Work!!

(1)The three little words are:
'Hold On, Please...'

Saying this, while putting down your phone and walking off (instead of hanging-up immediately) would make each telemarketing call so much more time-consuming that boiler room sales would grind to a halt.

Then when you eventually hear the phone company's 'beep-beep-beep' tone, you know it's time to go back and hang up your handset, which has efficiently completed its task.

These three little words will help eliminate telephone soliciting..

(2) Do you ever get those annoying phone calls with no one on the other
end?

This is a telemarketing technique where a machine makes phone calls and records the time of day when a person answers the phone.

This technique is used to determine the best time of day for a 'real' sales person to call back and get someone at home.

What you can do after answering, if you notice there is no one there, is to immediately start hitting your # button on the phone, 6 or 7 times as quickly as possible. This confuses the machine that dialed the call, and it kicks your number out of their system. Gosh, what a shame not to have your name in their system any longer!!!

 (3) Junk Mail Help:

When you get 'ads' enclosed with your phone or utility bill, return these 'ads'
with your payment.
Let the sending companies throw their own junk mail away.

When you get those 'pre-approved' letters in the mail for everything from credit cards to 2nd mortgages and similar type junk, do not throw away the return envelope.

Most of these come with postage-paid return envelopes, right?
It costs them more than
the regular 41 cents postage, 'IF' and when they receive them back.

It costs them nothing if you throw them away!
The postage was around 50 cents before the last increase and it is according to the weight. In that case, why not get rid of some of your other junk mail and put it in these cool little, postage-paid return envelopes.

One of Andy Rooney 's (60 minutes) ideas.

Send an ad for your local chimney cleaner to American Express. Send a pizza coupon to Citibank. If you didn't get anything else that day, then just send them their blank application back!

If you want to remain anonymous, just make sure your name isn't onanything you send them.. You can even send the envelope back empty if you want to just to keep them guessing! It still costs them 41 cents.

The banks and credit card companies are currently getting a lot of their own junk back in the mail, but folks, we need to OVERWHELM them. Let's let them
know what it's like to get lots of junk mail, and best of all they're paying for it...Twice!

Let's help keep our postal service busy since they are saying that e-mail is cutting into their business profits, and that's why they need to increase postage costs again
.
You
get the idea!

If enough people follow these tips, it will work ---- I have been doing this for years, and I get very little junk mail anymore.

Jane-

What soul satisfying ideas!  I had to read them aloud to Steve (he does know how to read, but I'm on a computer for one), and we laughed and laughed.

I don't buy anything via mail, so I don't get much junk.  Still - who wouldn't like less?

Hi Jane,

These are great tips. My husband Geno (if he picks up the phone) has another one and they NEVER call back! He says "Hi, I'm so glad you called"..I haven't talked to anyone in days and I need a friend..he keeps babbling and they hang up! It is sooo funny to listen to the caller who can't get a word in..it does take more time but our number is removed from their list! I will try the "Just a minute" one!! And then hitting the # button many times!!

B&C,  unfortunately that does not get rid of them.  They keep calling.

Rick,  if you call me you'd better speak quickly or I will be pounding in your ear.

C,  hmm indeed.  Can't wait to try it.

Russell,  believe me they will find your cell.  They already have found mine.

Dorie,  I like those two also.  I guess you could put them on hold instead.

Mary,  it is easy to spot the telemarketer.  Their number is usually blocked.  Unfortunately they keep calling and calling.  They don't give up.

Janice,  there you go.

Carol,  let me know how it goes.

Mary,  I wouldn't mind the telemarketers if they had an intelligent approach.  If I hear one more "how are you today".... Who teaches them their scripts.  And then there are the ones who slam the phone down on you when you ask them to remove you from their list.  So, no, I don't feel too sorry for them.

Carra,  you are welcome.

Melinda, would love to hear how it goes.

Tammy,  so.  Are you going to leave us hanging?

Jesse,  very funny.

Carole,  yeah, the polite method will reallly get them.  They will think they have a sucker.

Please hold for a minute and ####### ... is what I will do now instead of hanging up.

Personally, I think those ideas and suggestions are despicable. All it does is raise the cost of business for everyone. I also have much better things to do with my time.

To handle the telemarketers, I simply thank them and tell them I'm not interested.

We enjoy getting "junk mail" in our household since both of us are in the marketing business. If junk mail didn't work, they wouldn't do it. Also, we got $67.25 in cash in our junk mail last year, lots of postage stamps, and innumerable pens, pencils, and keychains. I haven't had to buy a pen or pencil in more than twenty years.

As far as Andy Rooney, I've always thought he was a jerk.

I don't understand why people would want to specifically try to destroy the businesses and professions of other people. That just never made sense to me. I'm better than that, and I really hope the rest of the ActiveRain community is, too.

So sad that ActiveRain decided to feature this post. Tells me a lot about the ActiveRain staff and society as a whole.

Richard, have at 'em

Sally,  that's one way

Vickie,  go for it.

Lori,  you don't have to feel sorry for them.  Look at it this way.  If they were sitting at home and getting these calls they would not be happy. Yet it's O.K. for them to do it. Do unto others, and all that.

Aaron,  you would please design it for me :)

Sajy,  enjoy.

Bob,  I would never be that fast.  However, most of the calls have the number blocked so you can't block them.

Haris,  just don't go over the weight limit and try and use the free return envelopes.

Margaret,  I wonder if Andy thought of this himself.  They are great ideas.

Sheldon,  fingers drumming.....oh Sheldon,  fingers drumming........

Have a land line at home that I can't give up, yet I never answer it. 90% of the calls are fund raisers or political--or were-a tempoary lull.  Guess I feel secure hearing the phone ring at 830, 1115, 345 and of course 5 then a good night 830.  On the junk mail, I did that for awhile but be careful some of them have a code linking it back to you--so I was told.  but how can you not follow Andys advise.

Jim,  I am no fan of Andy Rooney either.  In answer to the rest of your post.  the #### is for the robo calls which I would not even dignify by including them in the telemarketing catergory.  As far as the rest go, if they listened to you that would be one thing.  I continually tell them I am not interested after the obligatory "how are you today" opener, thank them for calling and hang up. Do you think that is the end of it? The calls continue from the marketing center.  Then there are the people who ask you to hit #1 to be connected.  When connected you ask them to kindly remove you from their list and they hang the phone up on you.  And the ones who can't reach you at home and call you on your cell and have the nerve to expect you to pay for them to give you the spiel.

And, junk mail is just that, junk mail. I don't like to open up a bill, a pain in itself, and have offers to spend more money accompany it.  There is a time and a place for everything.  There are plenty of mailers that come out altogether in an envelope.  You know what it is and you can choose to open it or not, unlike the ones that fly out of the bill envelope.  So I agree to disagree.  The whole thing is out of control.

You can do the same with email. On spam I get from my esteemed colleagues who inundate me with their listings and do not provide an opt out, I have gmail bounce the email back to them. I love the telemarketing technique...I always wondered about those calls.

Ross,  I figure they would have a trick up their sleeve with the return mail.

Frank,  that is funny.

Dawn,  unfortunately, the ones who stuff the envelopes in the first place are not the ones who will open it.  But it would be funny to see.

Philip, I don't have the time to do all the email setting stuff to bounce back.  Would love to.

Hi Jane ... I LOVE getting telemarketing and sales calls because I love to hear other people's pitches and objection handlers.  It's great practice for me and gives me an opportunity to see how other salespeople handle themselves.

In fact, I've been able to "steal" some really good lines from speaking to telemarketers and salespeople on the phone.  It doesn't matter if I'm interested in what they're selling ... I'll always keep them on the phone for a while if they're any good.

Quite frankly, I can't understand how real estate agents could get upset with incoming sales calls ... isn't that kind of hypocritical?  Any real estate agent that isn't calling or talking to people that they DON'T know probably isn't doing much business.

Tom,  enjoy.

Danny,  let me put this into perspective.  I cold call, and as you know, I don't use scripts. I have my own style which is very quickly introducing myself, asking the question, and then getting out.  All within the few seconds it takes to establish whether they have an interest or not.   I also call during the business day.  I don't call people at night after they have had a long day at work and just want to relax.  I also don't use a machine to dial numbers and collect the times they pick up so that I can hit them live next time.  10 different people calling you with the same opening line "hello, how are you today" I find beyond irritating.  If they came at me with a different tack, I would probably chat to them, and often do.

Arming these poor souls with scripts that you can recognize a mile away does not serve anyone well, least of all the telemarketer who has absolutely no interest in how you are today.

And I NEVER call back when I have been asked not to, which, by the way, is rare.

Hi Jane - I agree with you - some of the scripts are terrible.  By the way, "how are you?" is the absolute worst opening line that any salesperson can use.  I always laugh at that one, and usually reply with "Do you really care?"

Oh, and I disagree that you don't use scripts - whatever you say on your calls IS your script! :)

I know several folks who use the "set the phone down method".  One person said the guy even had the audacity to call back hollering about wasting his time!!  Now that really takes nerve.

Thanks for the explanation re the "mystery calls".  I'll certainly apply the # pounding on the next one!  The robo calls are a real pain as well and are really uncalled for.  Trying to get to or reach the phone can be a challenge or hardship for some and than to be met by a robo call.

I've always been amazed at the extent and cost of the junk mail but I never thought of sending it back and activating that cost as well for the pre-paid envelopes.

Thanks

This is great!  I'm so annoyed when I pick up the phone and it's ANOTHER person trying to get me to buy their product.  If I hear "It will pay for itself with just one closed transaction" I'm going to barf!  I run a successful business.  Do they think I'm that stupid NOT to know who to call and/or contact if I want to 'buy leads'  And I LOVE the idea of sending the junk mail BACK to them.  These marketers buy my name, and/or information to solicit me, and since when was my information up for sale?  I guess marketers don't really care about how they obtain their sources, whether it's my email, phone number and/or other private information.  Let the GAMES BEGIN!!

I don't get much mail, but what a fun idea to fill the envelope with more junk.

For phone calls, I sometimes I yell, OMG!  I am almost out of minutes, send me an email!  They say, what address?  I say,

Google 'mesquite nv real estate', you will find me.  Then I hang up.

You know, everytime someone googles your keywords and clicks on your stuff, and stays on your page for more than a few seconds, it helps your SEO a tiny, tiny bit.

Jane - I don't remember it off-hand, but there is a way you can sign up to not receive junk mail from those who you currently do not do business with.  It's similar to the "Do Not Call" list.

I have mixed feelings about telemarketing, considering I spent the initial years of my time in the Mortgage Industry cold-calling.  If they wanted to talk, cool.  If they didn't, onto the next.

These days, when a Telemarketer calls me, I'll listen to their spleel if I have the time and even give them pointers, if applicable.  Then I'll let them listen to me taking a dump, wiping my posterior, flushing the toilet,  and if they are still on the line ... I know it's someone worthy of perhaps doing business with.

Jane, I don't like junk mail either, but see it as the advertiser's right to send.  Maybe we should just pick up the phone and call the "offending parties" and ask them to take our name off their list (catalogues, etc).  That probably won't work for the bill inserts, though...

Cold callers? ... very annoying since all my phones are on the DNC list!  Love Andy's suggestions!

HI Jane,

come home for lunch and won't answer the home phone. It always rings around then and there is always an automated message looking to sellime something. Likewise around dinner time.

Since cell phones are the principal way we communicate now, I wonder why I am keeping the home phone.

Thanks for the tips!

Just how many times have I answered your posts?  You would think we got something going on here!  BUT WAIT A MINUTE!!!!!!!!!!!!  Your are shooting the Messinger!!!!!!  To truly be successful in Real Estate, we ourselves have to be telemarketers.  Although we don't call ourselves that.  It is part of our job~~~~~~~!!!!!  Or should I say, our livily hood, our career, etc!!

Jane,

I think you are enjoying these activities entirely too much :)

The Direct Marketing Association can stop a lot of the junk mail for you.  All you have to do is send a postcard or letter to

Mail Preference Service
Direct Marketing Association
PO Box 643, Carmel, NY 15012-0643

Include your name, address, zip code and a request to "activate the preference service".

This will stop mail from all member organizations unless it's someone that you  have ordered directly from.

I have mixed feelings on the telemarketers... it depends upon how busy I am when they call, the kind of attitude they have etc.   I have been known to hang up,  lay the phone down, visit with them, etc.  In fact, one sales call that I received was real estate related and I talked him into joining Active Rain!

Really great ideas!

But I'm not sure you are correct about the phone call with no one picking up.  I believe that telemarking companies are automatically dialing and if one of their agents is finished with their previous call it goes directly to them; so if no one answers it is because they are all still on a call.

I loved your ideas!

What I hate the worst is junk email or spam.  I send a reply to them, a copy to abuse@(their email company_, a copy to abuse@fbi in some cases (this is no existant...but possibly will scare them to stop...and I add in the subject the word SPAM-Stop this spammer - SPAM is a crime!

If you have some better idea to stop SPAM, I'd love to know it.

I've been sending back mail to solicitors for years.  Back in 2006 I made a short video when I was being overwhelmed with credit card and loan offers.  You can find it here on YouTube.com.  I guess it really worked.  It's almost stopped all the junk mail that I get.

But here's the real point.  I mail a lot of stuff out too.  And it's expensive.  So whenever I get a return to sender or a request to stop mail, no problem.  Getting mail back increases my efficiency and reduces my costs.

So indirectly whenever I send something back, I'm just making that mega marketers more efficient.  But that's ok.  I'll have one less item in my mailbox.

You can stop most calls by registering your home phone and cellphone at the National Do Not Call Registery. You can also suggest to the callers that they put you on their internal Do Not Call list, while informing them that they are violating the law by calling you. You can report repeat offenders to the Federal Trade Commission.

My office line isn't on the DNC list because business phones are exempt from the law so I get these calls all the time.  I usually ask that I be put on their internal DNC list and have yet to have anyone even try to respect this request.  I hate the idea of tying up the line with the "hold on please" but I think I might have to try.

As to the hang-ups I had no idea why I was getting.  Now I'm armed  :-)

Andy Rooney is very clever. I don't know how he came up with all of these.

However, when tellemarketers called and asked for the "lady of the house", we used to hand the phone over to one of the kids. A three year old is usually best. They're smart enough not to hang up, just keep talking and never give the phone back.

I'm not happy with most of these ideas. I don't like rudeness; I say "no, thanks" and hang up--gently. If it's on my home phone, I ask them to take me off their list and state that I am on the national DNC list.

I've known too many people who have had to try to make a living in telemarketing to think it's amusing or even just okay to walk away from the phone, blow a whistle into the receiver, or any of those other tricks. Why not, as Nancy Reagan stated, JUST SAY NO (and hang up, or say you are on the DNC list, etc.).

Robo-calls are a different thing, fine with me whatever you want to or can do to stop them. Ditto with the recorded messages that sound just real enough to lure you into staying on the for a few moments.

A suggestion for junk mail--at least catalogs: visit www.catalogchoice.org and take your name off the list for the catalogs you no longer want to receive. This has cut down my junk mail tremendously. As for coupons and such, many people actually use them and don't mind getting them in the mail. Why not just recycle them, give them to an interested friend, etc.? Why waste your time and the postal service's time by sending them back, just to cost the "offender" a few pennies? IMO this is just silly.

The Federal Trade Commission has a terrific resource to find out how to stop almost any unwanted solicitation: http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/consumer/alerts/alt063.shtm

Wouldn't this be better than spending all that energy on revenge?

BTW, I'm not a curmudgeon...I usually get a kick out of Andy Rooney.

Years ago I'd send back the postage paid envelopes; now I don't take the time to bother.

I guess it's a good thing I don't include return envelopes in my direct mail newsletters, what? On second thought, maybe I should--if your suggestion takes hold, that would be a very effective way to tighten up the efficiency of my mailings.

I used to be a waiter, working for tips. Ever since(and its been about 40 years), I have been a big tipper. Call it professional courtesy.  Because of my experience as a waiter I know what they do and how hard they work

I feel the same way when I encounter another sales person, Professional courtesy demands that I listen to their pitch and give them an honest response; yes or no 'thank you' and why.

I have to wonder whats wrong with you folks that like to mess with another salesperson trying to make a living. They say you are known by the company you keep. I never realized what a shit I must be to keep company with realestate agents

That is just disrespectful to any other human. why do you so hate getting junk mail. It wastes more of your time to sent is back. If you don't want it throw it out. I have actually started a collection of those face credit cards. I now look forward to seeing those in the mail now. And as for phone calls be curious that will get you much more. just say thank you for calling but please put me on your no call list. If you leave them on the line you are just using your own phone minutes. and as a side note i use to work for the phone company and hitting the # button several times does not work. That is an old wives tale.

Sue, I can't wait to try all this out either.

Carla,  oh, pity those poor telemarketers when they receive the wrath of Carla.

Virginia,  that's a clever one.  Everyone add that to the list.  However, I really don't relish the spam email that will follow.

Cameron,  thanks for stopping by.

Megan & Hanna,  yep, pass it on.  The more the merrier.

Cheryl, I didn't know either.

Jason,  I am on the floor laughing so hard, I think I can't get up.

Sue, it would be lovely if they listened to us.  I highly doubt they would.

John,  unfortunately, they have discovered the cell phone so you can't win.

Jennifer,  that is quite an apt analogy.  You can't get rid of cockroaches and they have been around since time immemorial.

Don,  you are absolutely right.  But there is a way to do it.  I try my best to be non-intrusive and not take up one second more of the person's time than necessary.  They hardly know I have approached them because I have hung up the phone if I sense no interest.  And I certainly don't ask them how they are doing today :)

Judi,  thanks for that address.  I hope others coming here see it also.  Re telemarketers, the occasional one has intrigued me also, but the majority of them give the game away right up front and I really don't have the time.

Charita,  glad you like it.

Missy, enjoy.

Morgan,  hope it works.

Sonny,  you are really working the system.  Good for you.

Jackie,  does it work?

Stephen, love the video.  I wasn't sure if your name was on what you sent back?

Elizabeth,  unfortunately that does not work.  I am on the do not call list, as is most everyone, and when you ask them not to call you they hang up on you.

Jason,  they are calling cell phones too.  I am sure the # doesn't work on that.

Melissa,  c'mon try it :)

Michael O,  there you go.  And I love the picture behind you.

Michael J,  I remember that one.

Chris,  thanks for stopping by.

Ritu,  you are now armed and dangerous.

Marc,  fun indeed.

Joe,  not quite sure how that works :)

Brian,  that is funny.

Amy,  as I have said previously, they pay no attention whatsoever to the DNC List

Rob,  there you go.

Ted,  I am dying to try it.  I haven't had a call yet.  I think they know.

Lisa,  thanks for dropping by,.

Michael C.,  glad you like the ideas.

Mark, thank you.

David,  another member.

Bob,  you do don't you.

Terri,  funny.  Did they call yet?

Bill,  thanks for coming by.

Rebecca,  what fun is that?

Aaron,  I don't think they pay any attention.

Ginevra,  that's the problem.  Unsubscribing from emails is the same.  Never do that you end up getting more.

Sonsie,  I appreciate your sentiment.  And it is not about being rude, It is about protecting your own privacy.  They don't respect it.  Calling during the dinner hour, or whenever.  Callling 3 or 4 times a day.  Calling your cell phone when you don't answer your land line.  Hanging up on you when you ask to be removed and all this while they are still calling people on the DNC list.  That is rude.

Barb,  you are welcome.

Lottie,  hey, novel idea :)

Ron,  there is sales and there is sales.  If you are calling people at all hours of the day and several times a day, using the cell phone minutes to try and sell them something, and then hanging up when they ask you to take them off the list, then I guess you can relate.  I always talk to the one that sound like they have something to day besides "how are you today"!

Teresa, gotta laugh or you will cry, right!

James,  the whole point of all this is they DON'T LISTEN WHEN YOU ASK THEM TO TAKE YOU OFF THE LIST!

Patricia,  go for it.

Jane,

Thanks for the tips.  At my office, I answer the phones, and usually just hang up when the pre-recorded calls come in.  Sometimes on more than one line at a time!

To hold down the pound sign works as well.  There is usually a little recording saying the phone number has been removed.

Also, a lot of the real people don't realize it is a business, and say sorry when I tell them.  It's nice that they sometimes have some sort of boundaries about that.

Have a great day!

Rachel

Jane...one of my favorite ways of ending calls is when they ask..."How are you doing this evening?"...I answer... "Gosh, I am so glad you asked.  Do you have a few minutes?  My husband recently left me and I just found out my daughter is pregnant...  Not to mention I just got an eviction notice and I heard that Luann just got kicked off The Bachelor.  I also found a wart on my pinky toe.  Have you ever had a wart on your pinky toe?  Goodness!  It's so painful!  So...I decided to go to DSW to find some different shoes...you know...the kind that would let my little pinky toe breath a bit.  Speaking of breathing...I have noticed that when I go up stairs it becomes a bit more labored.  Do you think I should see a doctor?  Wait...no...I don't have health insurance...

I used to put all the applications back in the mail to the credit card companies, but left the part with my name intact. AFter a while I stopped getting so many apps. I forgot about that tactic, and just got 2 more today. Will put them right back in the mail, thanks for the reminder!

I didn't know these little tricks. I get soooooo  tired of all that junk mail. It needs to stop. What a waste of our paper.

Linda,  I actually don't get them any more.  Wonder why.  I have no one to practice on.

Wayne,  sure is.

Ty,  have fun.

Kathy,  What a great list.  I've used #1 before but I've never heard about hitting the # button rapidly when those calls with nobody on the line come in.  I've recently gotten way too many of those and way to many telemarketing calls at the office.  I had no idea they might be related.  Wow, can't wait to try it.  Thanks.

What fun....I should definitely try this. I know they are doing their jobs, but it does drive me nuts. I hate the dumb questions that can only have a "yes" answer to it...just be real and tell me why you are calling.

Marian, hope you get the chance.

Karen,  I know.  I they engaged you somehow, it would be different, but asking how you are when they couldn't care less, what do they expect.

This is too funny and worth the reblog. If everyone did this we could probably stop them altogether.

I used to have a list somewhere of things for Telemarketers.  Let me see if I can remember a few:

  1. You want to be my friend?  (with enthusiasm).

  2. Do you know how to get goat blood out of the carpet?

  3. What are you wearing?  (pant while saying this.)

  4. Give me your number and I will call you back while you are eating.

  5. The moon people told me you would be calling.

  6. Talk slow I am trying to write this all down.

  7. Let them give the entire spiel then ask them to repeat it.

Jane, a little late to weigh in on you post, but I wanted to let you know that I've been returning junk mail in prepaid envelopes for years now.  I didn't know about the # button and will give it a try as I've had a few of those Robo calls lately.

Hi Jane -- Another update from my previous comment -- Real Estate Client Referrals hounds me like nothing I have ever seen.  Even when I have asked to be taken off their list, they say, we don't have a list, we just call.

So...I got two calls today and they both sounded like they just rolled out of bed with a huge THUD onto the floor, not even an upbeat call.  So...I say: Hold on please...and I heard somebody yell when my phone was down on the table: Are you there...the 2nd call: I was grocery shopping, and the poor guy didn't quite make last all the way through the produce section.  I forgot about him, and I'm sure he has now forgotten about me too!

You rock!

Jane,

PLEASE retract this post.  If the credit card companies have to start paying all this postage they

will raise our interest rates to recoup the money.

Absolutely hilarious.  I've never thought of a lot of those ideas, but I'm going to try them now.  Just look at all of the comments on this post.  It's apparent that junk mail is a major annoyance to almost everyone!
