Map of this morning's drive to Agua Caliente Park in Tucson

I'm always looking for ways to illustrate my topic with visual images.  The reason?  We think visually ~ in images, and an image conveys immediate understanding in a way that words alone cannot.

This morning, I'm hiking in Agua Caliente Park.  It's an hours' drive across Tucson from my home in the Tucson Mountains.  I'll be photoblogging about it later, and I'll want my readers to have a sense of the physical and ecological context of the photos.

Google Maps will provide the tools I need for my Localism readers to understand what I want to convey:

  • Where the park is located
  • What the surrounding terrain is like
  • How they can get there from anywhere in or around Tucson

TUTORIAL:  How to make a map like this for your Real Estate business:

Use this method to bring people to you ~ to your open house, your listing,
a favorite restaurant in your town or city ~ in short,
to any place you want your reader to find.

Step by step

1.  Google your destination.  I googled "Agua Caliente Park Tucson."

2.  Click "Get Directions."

3.  Zoom in and out until you have the map level of detail that you want.

4.  Use Snagit or Print Screen to capture and save your image as a .jpeg file.

The fun part:

5.  Open Microsoft Powerpoint to a blank slide.

6.  Import your picture, and size it to fit the screen.

7.  Using the powerful tools available in Powerpoint, give the image a border, add text boxes, photos, word art, etc. to create the final image.   (You can bring any element of the final image forward or backward until you're satisfied with the final result.)

8.  Once again, use Snagit or Print Screen to crop your final image and save it in a folder.  Since I started blogging for Localism, I've created Community Folders to organize my images.

That's it!  Go forth and blog!

EDIT:  I used this method to create my AR Profile Photo with the signature.

EDIT:  To answer your questions on this post, here's Part 2

How Do Automate The Process of Publishing Your Active Rain Post to FB, Plaxo, LinkedIn...

Great idea Mike. Do you have your listings imported to google or on google maps?

I think consumers like to see photos like you said so when I list a new home it goes on Google maps. Sometimes, well most of the time I just do it from Flickr.

Mike, looks great and as usual a brilliant idea for getting people to the area your talking about.  Why put it into powerpoint?  I just Snagit, make it beautiful, link the google map to the Snagit picture.  What are the benefits of your version?  SEO?  I think that linking anything with a google map would bring good juice.

Mike, great advice about saving the maps as an image...but did you know that you could save the image in Powerpoint as a .gif, .jpeg, or .png? All you have to do is go to the save as menu and instead of saving it as a presentation, scroll down until you see the gif, jpeg or png choices...

That way, you don't have to go back to snagit or jing in order to create the picture....

Hi Mike,

I sat down this morning to play with this and have a quick question.  Does anyone know if there is a "copyright" issue by using the Google map in this form instead of embedding maps the way that they offer their service?

7:21am • #65
1,400,129 Points 109 Featured Posts Outside Blog Attended Rain Camp Called Shot Master

Mike,

I just visited the Google web site and read through some of their terms of use and it seems to me that using the maps by taking them with snag it, etc and then modifying them would be an infringement.  Some of wording:

" you must not (nor may you permit anyone else to)...access or use the Service or any Content through any technology or means other than those provided in the Service, or through other explicitly authorized means Google may designate;... copy, translate, modify, create a derivative work of, or publicly display any Content or any part thereof ...pre-fetch, cache, or store any Content, except that you may store limited amounts of Content for the purpose of improving the performance of your Maps API Implementation if you do so temporarily, securely, and in a manner that does not permit use of the Content outside of the Service"

Maybe I'm wrong, but the wording seems to indicate to me that creating maps or taking a "snap-shot" of them and using them in any form other than the services that Google provides is against their terms of usage.

Anyone else have that concern?  Discussion?

I would use Jing first before a tool in Vista. Jing is basically Snagit (made by the same company) and has some neat features like text and arrow callouts. jing will also do video captures of the computer screen.

9:36am • #87

Mike, PP and Publisher will both allow you to dress up a captured image, and the idea of using Google maps in posts is really interesting.  I saw your answer about trying to get a response from Google on the Copyright issue, and would be interested in their response.  Their TOS would seem to prohibit any use of a Google map other than with the two methods they present, i.e linking and embedding.  I would assume this is because both of those methods bring viewers back to their site (with ads), so I hope you hear from them.  BTW:  The snipping tool in Windows Vista works well, as does Jing - Jing offers a few more tools.  Thanks.
