Main Street HurricaneYesterday I got a phone call from Scott Edwards, the new mayor of Hurricane.  Apparently I'm not the only person who uses Google Alerts, and Scott’s name popped up on The Putnam Scoop, my new local blog.

I’d written a little reminder about that whole dog limit law issue.  (I’m not a fan.Scott mentioned in the city council meeting in June, before he was elected, that he would like to remove the limit of two dogs from the language of the law.  He said he felt, as I do, that our other nuisance laws already cover any issues that may arise, and that it’s not right to use a number itself as a law.

Well, I’m very happy to say that Scott does plan on eliminating this language from our law books!!  (YAY!!!)  He invited me to the next city council meeting where he plans to put this before the council for a vote.

(And I do apologize, I am casual in my blog and we went to school together, so he’s Scott and not Mr. Edwards.  We’re friendly folks around here, it’s OK.)

Scott was also very interested in The Putnam Scoop.  I want to keep locals up on what’s happening around here, but I want to do it in a very positive way.  I love Putnam County and I think if there’s a problem it’s not going to help us to whine and accuse.  If we don’t like something, such as a dog limit law, we should pull together and change it.  We all have a voice and we all matter.  Scott invited me to meet with him and the city manager Ben Newhouse each month to keep me up to date -- so that I can keep YOU aware of what's going on around here.

Scott, I look forward to speaking to you again in the future, and I was very pleased to hear your positive take on Hurricane’s future.  Call me again anytime.  :o)

Sarah- congratulations!  I had two large dogs when my father passed.  I cannot imagine a law that would have prevented me from adopting his beloved dog, Greta.  It wasn't a negotiable occurance.  Thank you for making a difference in your town; I should probably check the limits in my town.  Nah- Dad's miniature pinscher, Greta, isn't going anywhere- besides, she's more like a quarter of a dog, anyway.  THANKYOUTHANKYOUTHANKYOU for helping people whose local laws would prevent such an adoption.

Laurie - We have two dogs, and when I volunteered at the shelter there was a first time mommy dog who wasn't caring for her newborn pups.  They were cold and had to be warmed up before we could feed them, or they would die.  I held a puppy under my shirt against my belly to warm him up.  I'd have taken him home and been his Momma, and there would have been no way I'd give back a puppy I raised like that.  But it was too late for him, and he died.  I don't need a third dog, but if one needed me like that, I could see having one more.  What's one more?  You're welcome, because there are plenty of situations where taking in one more isn't an option, it's going to happen.  And it needs to be OK.

Maggie - You always have more faith in me than I do in myself.  THANK YOU.

Way to go Sarah, not only did I discover google alerts thanks to you, but I found you're pretty connected in Hurricane!!  It's a dog-eat-dog world sometimes and I'm happy to hear you have found someone to wrap that "Doggy Limit law" up in a doggy-bag!  :-)

Christina - That's the hope!!

Brad - Wow, I'm surprised I could teach you about something!  ;o)  Google Alerts are pretty cool, sometimes I'm surprised where I turn up.  And I'm SO GLAD we'll be getting rid of that silly law.  Responsible pet owners shouldn't be forced to have small pet families.

Scott is one smart Mayor. He knows it's better to have you stand with him instead of against him. You have developed a wonderful forum for advocacy and you're getting results. I am so very proud of you and the way you've used your blogging skills for such a worthy cause. One person can make a mighty difference. Love, Mom

I would be careful Sarah you become the next mayor!  Getting involved is the only way to make positive change.  It makes no sense to be another closet complainer.  Nice post.

Mom - :o)  THANK YOU.

Lysa - LOL!  Thank you, too!  I don't know how I do any of it, really.  Just kind of happens.

Jeff - If it rocks, it's all thanks to you!!  I'm beginning to feel a need for a picture tour.

Gary - Oh, not much chance of that, Gary!  I don't want the headaches ... but I don't mind giving out a few to get my way, on behalf of the doggies.  ;o)

And people say that the government does not listen to those that vote them in... that they have their own agenda.  Way to prove them wrong Scott and Sarah...

So, what kind of dog are you going to get when the law is ammended?

Some times you don't adopt them, they adopt you.

Hope you make good progress with your city government on this.

Good for you for stepping up and perservering!!!  With all the focus on breed bans, your situation could easily have been set aside.  You've saved a lot of families heart ache in the future!
