There's not much in Bergheim...or at least in what most think Bergheim is. I legally live in Boerne, TX...but am closer to what most refer as Bergheim. And...when I refer to Bergheim...I am thinking of the corner of Highway 46 and 3351. Not much there...a Valero station, Taquitos, a hair salon, Bergheim Cellars, the Bergheim General Store...and of course, O'Briens.
My first exposure to O'Briens was one of my first dates with my now husband, Larry. We were looking for homes for me to rent when we decided to take a break and go eat. I was immediately charmed by the location of O'Briens...especially with the Bergheim General Store right across the street. "So, is this it?", I asked Larry? He replied, "Pretty much...". He then went on to tell me that O"Briens had once been the site of a major motion picture...the title which escapes me now.
I don't know if I loved the food at O'Briens because I was in the mushy, sappy stage of my relationship with Larry or if it truly was great food. Over the past two years, however, I have come to realize that the food was great...but better yet was the hometown feel of the restaurant itself. There were few nites we were there that Tim and Becky O'Brien, the owners, weren't there as well. There were also few times we were there that they didn't stop by our table to thank us for coming in.
My favorite part of their menu...believe it or not...is the jalapeno corn bread they serve while you are waiting on your food. It definitely has a kick to it...but goes great with the Cosmopolitan I usually order from the bar. Btw...the bartender (crum...I can't remember his name...sorry)...is amazing. I have never had a bad drink when he made it.
O'Briens is a great restaurant. It's worth the drive. You may come for the award winning menu...but you will return for the atmosphere and the feeling that you're not just another customer. Take a look...take the drive. O'Briens....848 Highway 46...Bergheim, TX.
