Big Brother

62 years ago, a book was written that, even if you haven't read it, you've certainly heard of it, or at least you've heard the phrases that became common in our everyday language since the publishing of the book. Does 'Big Brother' ring any bells with you?

Written in 1948, George Orwell's "1984" has become a classic read, still mandatory in many classrooms. In the book, we learn of the horrifying consequences of losing our freedom to the need for a safe and peaceful society. The people are convinced that their loss of freedom is a small price to pay for the greater good.

Today, I thought of this book and it's message, when I heard on the news that the FBI is once again pushing for the ISPs to keep logs of their users 'origin and destination information for non-content data' for at least two years. Presumably to be used in aprehending child pornographers, terrorists and other persons involved in illegal activities.

In other words, for our own good.

While at first glance, this and other policies such as

wire tapping landlines and cell phones, video surveillance and cameras almost everywhere we go, airport body scanners, gun control, the 2005 FCC requirement that all cell phone carriers are required to provide the ability to trace cell phone calls to within 300 feet, etc.,

all sound like reasonable precautions,

I can't help but wonder at how these things could conceivably be put to use at some later date.

Not to mention the fact that the government, as well as private entities, haven't always been effective in protecting our private data, and that storing and maintaining this data will be expensive for the ISPs. I wonder who will have to pick up that tab? The FBI? Uh huh. Right.

Much of what Orwell wrote about in 1948 as fiction, is the reality of our world today.

Where do we draw the line between ensuring our collective safety,

and preserving our right to privacy?

I don't have the answers, I'm just asking questions.

We should all be asking questions.

Shouldn't we?

In "1984", George Orwell wrote,

“The past was erased, the erasure was forgotten, the lie became truth.”

There certainly has been a bit too much big brother activity... funny how Orwell saw 1984 as the future world isnt it?

Debi,

If it will same even one child from being molested or stop one person from being murdered by a serial murderer or another building from being bombed with hundreds of people in it, I'm all for disclosing my 'private' affairs....

Hi Jo- That's what makes it so agreeable. Our public safety. The fear is that one day, it could be used against law abiding citizens for more sinister purposes. Germany's Hitler comes to mind. People innocently gave information to the state, only to have it used against them in the most henious way later. That's not to say it would happen, only to know that it could. We should be aware of the possibilities, and be diligent in watching the way the wind blows.... Look to the past, to see the future, as they say.

Hi Debi:

Big Brother is watching is always in back of my mind.

Online and during everyday activities..

We can be tracked via our Cell phones...some of our privacies are already gone.

Debi, If more video surveillance was installed in high crime areas, crime would certainly go down. I admit I still feel creepy when I walk into a public building and see the little black bubble checking everyone out. And I also agree with Jo!

Toula - Yes, on my mind as well. I think more of our privacies are gone than we really know. How many of us really pay attention to what new policies are implemented quietly behind the scenes?

Wanda - They are probably not in those places because they would routinely be destroyed.

Deb,

I just re-read Orwell's 1984 last month. The story it portrays was scary then, just as it is now. I live in the shadows of NSA at Ft. Meade, and I can't even begin to imagine what secrets they're collecting there 24/7.

The idea of giving up privacy to "protect even one person" is not cool with me.  Frankly, it scares the beejeebees out of me.  Has video survelliance actually been shown to be a strong deterrant to crime?  I don't know.  Living in a daycare state is not acceptable.  Personal and societal responsibility are lost concepts.

Hi Debi, interesting that you bring this up, just this morning I deleted a comment I made on my own post for the first time . . . I had gotten in the spirit of the times and the fun we have here. But, upon further consideration, knowing the searching algorithms used to find certain key words, I felt my word choices could have been better considered. At the same time, I don't want to be second guessing myself all the time either. So, I'll do the best I can and prepare for the worst ;-)

Robert - thanks for wieghing in - Hmmmm is right....

Rich - What made you read it again recently? Did you read Brave New World, and Animal Farm back when, too?

Brenda - I agree with scary part - and that surveillance has not been a deterrant. People rob convenience stores with impunity - knowing full well the cameras are there.

Frank - Do you know if the comments section in our posts are indexed? I've never been sure of that. Let me know :)

Debi,  I think my feelings are covered very well by this quote from Benjamin Franklin, "They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety".

Hi Debi, I haven't read the article, so I honestly don't know anything about it --- In this digital age I believe that the FBI, CIA , IRS, the credit card companies, dishnetwork, your bank, visa, onstar, satellites, etc...collectively already know everything, or could easily find out everything already. did I mention speed cameras? UGH -- Big Brother is already here, I'm not sure what there is to do about it either.  I don't imagine they are watching me - now that would be boring! LOL

Gary - I really like that quote. Have not heard it before, but somehow it just rings true...

Mary - If they're watching me, they're bored too, LOL

But the now of it doesn't concern me so much as what could be. There are societies with such a thumb on their people, that some fear their own thoughts, much less what they might inadvertently say. All this data could be brought together to create a society devoid of freedom, and filled with control and fear. Just saying.... and again, I remind us of Hitler's Germany. Most people at the time never dreamed how far it would go. Even as they felt the noose tighten, they never believed it would end as it did. It's that refusal to accept the possibilty that allowed it to happen.

Hi Again Debi, having managed a data center in a previous life, I have to believe that all the content, including comments, are in storage and therefore accessible if desired. As far as search engine indexing goes, I've seen comments made decades ago show up in searches. So, I just got to believe it is all available, even if not apparent.

Debi...this is a tough question...as a child of the '60's I am anti-big brother on the other hand the opportunity to snag child molesters, terrorist etc. makes me want to say "do it, what are you waiting for another 911?"  The problem I have is that once given the power I believe it would be difficult to take that power away.

Hi Debi,

You generated some excellent comments. On the question you raised

( Where do we draw the line between ensuring our collective safety,

and preserving our right to privacy? )

, the feelings are mixed. And that was predicatable.

Perhaps our Ministry of Truth could be more aptly named.

Are 50 million people who are fed up with their government and willing to remove it Terrorists or Freedom fighters?  How will we all feel when this technology is turned on us, or a neighbor that is against healthcare reform, or a friend that wants us out of Afghanistan?  Be careful for what you wish for.
