Storm-damaged structures might be weakened and pose hazards.  Floods and earthquakes can cause considerable damage to a building foundation or to the bearing partitions under and around a structure.  Storm surge and wave action from a hurricane can undermine foundations or damage pilings in pier-type construction.

Long-term exposure to water may destroy the structural integrity of materials such as particle board and drywall, creating a hazard for workers and occupants.  Determine potential structural hazards before proceeding with mitigation and restoration services.

*  Damage to natural gas lines, resulting in leaking lines, is possible with hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes and major flooding.  IF you smell gas, evacuate the building immediately and contact the local gas company or the local fire protection agency.

*  If water came into the structure from above, check for trapped water in ceiling cavities.  Drywall softens with exposure to water, and ceilings may fall onto workers or occupants.  Drill weep holes to release water trapped in ceiling cavities.  Starting at the edge of sagging areas, drill holes to allow water to drain.  Move progressively toward the center of the sagged area.  Drilling first in the center of the sagged area may cause the ceiling drywall to release suddenly and fall.

*  Long-term exposure to water may cause particle board to lose most of its structural strength.  Particle board floors in building that have been exposed to floodwaters or other hgih saturation water conditions may not support the weight of machinery or people.

*  Broken glass, exposed nails, splinters and other sharp objects may be present in buildings that have been damaged from storms or high winds.  Watch where you step, and determine the structural integrity of the building before beginning mitigation and restoration services.

*  The roofing system may be weakened in structures damaged by storms and high winds.  Before installing temporary roofing or working on the roof, determine the structural integrity of the roof.

All good points Crystal....the "pitch the landscaping away from the foundation" refrain sung by home inspectors is not because they have nothing else to say !
