Hiking in Southern OregonHiking in Southern OregonSouthern Oregon offers hikers many options for a great outdoor vacation.  Oregon has thousands of miles of isolated deciduous and old growth forests, along with hundreds of miles of trail systems.  Much of this is high country, although three are several ocean and coastal beach trails.  Oregon hikers can enjoy the high mountain old growth forest trails, with icy bubbling springs and streams, jewel like mountain lakes and canyon bottoms covered with moss and fern.  In addition, there is some great hiking trails along the Oregon coast with beautiful vistas and quiet beaches.

The Illinois Trail offers a hike through the north end of the Kalmiopsis Forest.  It is a reasonably difficult trail and is especially close to the Bald Mountain.  However, it offers spectacular views of the rugged canyon.  From late May through July, a variety of wildflowers are in bloom, and there are camping sites along the trail. Additionally, there are a number of side trails intersecting this trail.  No power-driven or mechanized equipment (such as bicycles) are permissible within the wilderness or on the trail, and other sections are closed to motor vehicles from May 15 till September 15.  The trail features stunning wildflowers, old-growth trees, strong and steep river canyons and a variety of wildlife.

Hi Melinda,

This sounds so interesting to me, so inviting. I've hiked many of our local trails in SoCal, yet nothing in your neck-of-the-woods. Thanks for the info.

Hi Melinda - I have been a hiker and backpacker most of my life, but I haven't been in a few years - the longest stretch ever.  Your post makes me itch to get out there again, and Oregon is beautiful.  Maybe when the weather warms a bit.

Very nice Melinda,  There are a few trails up here in the Willamette valley that i used to take the kids on, till I looked down.  All of the bushes were poison oak!  There doesn't seem to be as much poison oak up higher.  Thanks for the post very nice picture.

Hi Melinda - I have had the pleasure of doing some hiking in So Oregon - It truly is a beautiful place to be! I've even been snow shoeing at Crater Lake, and seen the aspen glow there. A magical time :)

Wonderful post Melinda and I have hiked all my life and most of my hiking was done when I lived in Portland. When we were teenagers we use to take the bus as far as we could towards Mt Hood and hike all weekend long, camping and bonding with mother nature.

I still do a lot of hiking and my favorite place is in the Redwoods in Northern Cal not very far from you!
