Every Wondered what Winter Sports will be Part of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver?

By
Real Estate Agent

In case you didn't know, there will be fifteen winter sports events at the 2010 Winter Olympics here in Vancouver. The sporting events are divided up into 3 categories.  1.) Ice sports - bobsled, luge, skeleton, ice hockey, figure skating, speed skating, short track speed sking and curlng.

2.) Alpine Skiing & Snowboarding -  alpine, freestyle and snowboarding; and 3.) the Nordic Events - biathalon, cross country skiing, ski jump and nordic combined.

The venues will be divided up with The Opening and Closing ceremonies and the Ice Sports held in Vancouver and Richmond; the Nordic Events wil be held in the Callaghan Valley just west of Whistler; and all the Alpine Skiing events will be on Whistler Mountain, with the Sliding events on Blackcomb Mountain; and Cypress Mountain hosting the 2010 Freestyle and Snowboard events.

For you NHL fans, Vancouver 2010 will also be the first winter Olympics in which both men's and women's hockey will be played on a narrower, NHL-sized ice rink, measuring 200 ft × 85 ft (61 m × 26 m), instead of the international size of 200 ft × 98.5 ft (61 m × 30 m).   I wonder if any Teams will end up using that as an excuse for losing their games? :-)

The games will be played at General Motors Place, home of the NHL's Vancouver Canucks, will be temporarily renamed Canada Hockey Place for the duration of the Olympics, because no Corporate/Company logos can be used!  Temporarily displaced, the Vancouver Cannucks will have set another First by having to do the longest road trip in NHL history, (14 games over 6 weeks) to allow the GM Place to be used for the Games. Yeah Luongo - go Team Canada!

Liz - The Canadian and US teams can't blame the NHL sized rinks if they lose.  A number of these events you listed seem to require a lot of snow.  Has enough snow arrived by truck, bulldozer and snowmaking machinery yet for the duration of the Olympics???

Liz, you've got us all fired up for the start. Nice post....and it is so true that we can forget our worries for a while and enjoy ourselves with this one of a kind event. We don't have the Oylmpics in Redding but we do have the Sundial Film Festival and I've been working on a post about that. It so fun when you love it!

I love figure skating and I have never in my life seen a hockey game and well, I don't plan to change that.  Of course I'll still be pulling for my "team".
