Snow Fun

By
Education & Training with J29 Project

We have been inundated with snow in Hardin County, Kentucky this week.  This was the second snow day in a row and the whole area has shut down.  It snows a little bit here and no one wants to take any chances.

I really dislike the snow.  I grew up in Rochester, NY and lived for three years at Fort Drum, NY not too long ago.  I don't like it or anything that comes with it.  BUT ....

I have a daughter who, like every kid, loves it and wants to go play as soon as she sees the first snow flake.  I would be content to just stay inside and look at it, but she wants to touch it, feel it and eat it!

I didn't want to go out yesterday and she was very upset because the neighborhood kids weren't around and she had no one to play with.  So I made a compromise with her.  I would fill a squirt bottle with colored water and she could use the snow covered lawn as her canvas.  She picked the colors and the designs and by the time she was done, she realized that she could smooth it out and make 3-D images even.  She got to have fun in the snow, mom stood at the door waiting to refill the bottle, and she got to learn something new. It was ALMOST as good as a snow ball fight!

Smiley face and a rose!  I took the picture from inside so it looks upside down!

It is amazing what a little bit of water, some food coloring and a squirt bottle made for making homemade candy can do!

What fun Sheila.  Making ice cold lemonade out of what could have been a lemon of a day!

Great idea. When my grandson gets older and we go to Pittsburgh, it'll be worth trying. But, I think I'll send his mom out with him, while I watch from the warmth of the house!

Even tho you hate the snow, you helped her to enjoy it.  Up North here in MN, you either love snow or move - I am staying!  LOL

Kathleen - I probably didn't hate snow until after I lived in Hawaii - perfect climate is hard to give up and I  haven't been satisfied since. :)

Lived in Hawaii?  I've never even been to Hawaii!  Anyways, your daughter had fun and you helped her create memories.  One summer I gave my kids each a bucket of water and a large paint brush and let them paint the house and the mailbox and anything else they wanted to paint...they loved it and it kept them busy for hours.

Lori- no, just desperate and feeling guilty that I didn't want to go out to play.  Thanks though!

Valerie - great idea!  She would love to eat her creations I am sure!  Thanks!

Sharon- yes, I have done things like that too!  Whatever it takes some days.  My favorite was taking shaving cream and food coloring in an old egg carton and I let her use them like finger paints in the bath tub.  Then she would take an old syrup bottle and squirt it all away to wipe the slate clean for another creation.  I miss those days!  Lucky you - you are going to get ready for round two!
