COME ON GOOGLE!

I LOVE THIS IDEA.  I have no hope that they'll be coming to my neighborhood in the sticks of Loudoun County VA.  We have the high tech population in Loudoun County, but we're still pretty rural once outside of town.  However, if the very presence of Google in any neighborhood means better service from the existing providers, it will be wonderful.

I saw this on a blog this a.m. and a comment said that it wouldn't be popular because Google wouldn't have the infrastructure to provide on site service for repairs, etc. that the existing service providers do.

HA!  I suspect that that writer has never needed service from Verizon for DSL.  My last outage took 3 weeks to repair and the outage was caused by a tree that fell on a line near the Verizon equipment station.

The reason we get such poor service from the providers we have is because of the lack of competition.  If Google caused Verizon to provide better broadband service, good.

Come on Google.

Imagine navigating the web at 1Gbps. Google has just announced its plan to test ultra-high speed broadband networks in selected locations. The connection will be more than 100 times faster than most current speeds throughout the country. Now here's the really cool part: they haven't chosen the trial areas yet. Which is where you come in.

Go and nominate your community to be one of the fiber test networks. Encourage your local politicians and city officials to push for your area. Think of this is as an opportunity to give your community an advantage.

With speed constrictions removed, Google hopes that users will discover the next killer app. Sensations like YouTube became viable only when bandwidth enabled the public to stream videos easily. Wouldn't it be great if one of the next big developments happened on your home turf?

What exactly are they looking for in a candidate? Google doesn't specify, but we have a few ideas. Modern and ongoing construction could be a potential benefit because of ease of integration. An area with old homes would be disadvantageous. The ideal community might have a population of developers, programmers, and yes, geeks. Say, Cupertino, or Mountain View? Sure, but we're hoping they consider a neighborhood in Philadelphia.

The response deadline is March 26, 2010. Good luck!

Lenn:  Very cool.   Might have to nominate Braemar in Bristow, VA for this one.  We're getting freshly dug for Verizon FIOS and have a ton of people in techie fields that telecommute.

I would love Google to give the two providers duopoly Verizon (FIOS) and Time Warner (RoadRunner) a run for their money in Manhattan.

Lenn - I have to ditto Mitchell's comment.  I love FIOS right now but if Google can get in the mix of things, hmm who knows how many people will make the switch.

BTW - 3 weeks outage what a bummer. How did you get by? - you are a blogging machine.

I heard that Google is rolling out a "new" service that promises web speed 50 times faster than currently available in an effort to get the companies to upgrade so that new programs requiring faster service can be rolled out. It will be interesting to see how this unfolds. As far as DSL, I have a good friend who is a lobbyist with the phone company and no matter what they try to sell cable service is faster (at least here in Austin) and better on service!

I hope your service does not go out during your current weather conditions. Are you still snowed in?

Russell.  I'm not snowed in.  My snow removal guys have rescued me.

There's no cable where I live, in the sticks.  Probably never will be.  I'm too low for wireless.  I'm limited to dial-up, DSL with Verizon or HughesNet which I had for a back-up for my first year out here but not worth the $70 a month.  It wasn't any more reliable than Verizon DSL.

Hi Lenn: Great to hear that you are able to move about as you wish.  The cable and communication companies in this countries are very crooked.  It's a pity we don't have more choices.

Hi Lenn - I wish Google would do more in Canada.  We still don't have Google Voice.
