COME ON GOOGLE!
I LOVE THIS IDEA. I have no hope that they'll be coming to my neighborhood in the sticks of Loudoun County VA. We have the high tech population in Loudoun County, but we're still pretty rural once outside of town. However, if the very presence of Google in any neighborhood means better service from the existing providers, it will be wonderful.
I saw this on a blog this a.m. and a comment said that it wouldn't be popular because Google wouldn't have the infrastructure to provide on site service for repairs, etc. that the existing service providers do.
HA! I suspect that that writer has never needed service from Verizon for DSL. My last outage took 3 weeks to repair and the outage was caused by a tree that fell on a line near the Verizon equipment station.
The reason we get such poor service from the providers we have is because of the lack of competition. If Google caused Verizon to provide better broadband service, good.
Come on Google.

Imagine navigating the web at 1Gbps. Google has just announced its plan to test ultra-high speed broadband networks in selected locations. The connection will be more than 100 times faster than most current speeds throughout the country. Now here's the really cool part: they haven't chosen the trial areas yet. Which is where you come in.
Go and nominate your community to be one of the fiber test networks. Encourage your local politicians and city officials to push for your area. Think of this is as an opportunity to give your community an advantage.
With speed constrictions removed, Google hopes that users will discover the next killer app. Sensations like YouTube became viable only when bandwidth enabled the public to stream videos easily. Wouldn't it be great if one of the next big developments happened on your home turf?
What exactly are they looking for in a candidate? Google doesn't specify, but we have a few ideas. Modern and ongoing construction could be a potential benefit because of ease of integration. An area with old homes would be disadvantageous. The ideal community might have a population of developers, programmers, and yes, geeks. Say, Cupertino, or Mountain View? Sure, but we're hoping they consider a neighborhood in Philadelphia.
The response deadline is March 26, 2010. Good luck!

Oh boy, I would love to be part of THAT test group. No hope here either...
