DOG BARKING and YOUR NEIGHBORS

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with CastNet Realty TREC#263257

Want to be a good neighbor?  Keep your dogs inside or teach them not to bark constantly or get rid of them.  Your neighbors should not have to endure constant barking!

It is  2:00 AM and here I sit writing a blog post since I was awakened from a very nice sleep because of my neighbors dog.  It is beagle of some sort and howls rather than a normal bark.  In the cold winter night, those howls go right through you like the chilly wind.

Oh, you can lie there and pretend the dog will hush in a few minutes.  But, that is simply not true.  That dog will go on and on all night long.  For three years now, we have had this problem.  Yes, I have talked with the owner about it.  Everytime, they are so sorry.  Everytime they will put the dog in the garage.  Everytime it will not happen again.  It's true, weeks or months will pass after every episode but here we are again.

Everytime I get angry.  Now I have their phone number close by.  Everytime they will get awakened also. Their five acres is certainly not far enough away.  I wish it were five miles away.  If you are guilty of letting your dog run loose at night or even in the daytime and disturbing your neighbors, SHAME on YOU.  Get the dogs in the house.

Not everyone loves the sound of a barking dog.  People have to sleep.  Be a good neighbor!

Ricki how do you really feel?  Kidding I really do understand as our neighbors would go to Friday night football games and their two dogs would bark from 6-11 pm like clockwork every friday.  It would wake up my baby and I would feed them milk bones to get them to quit down for a bit but that is what it was only for a short time.

I agree with you...I think it's so rude to not take other people into consideration when you have pets.

Hope you have a great day!

Hi Barbara,    That's great for in the city but we are in the country and they dont come out here.  Already checked.

Hi Clason,   Yes, I am angry about it and so many times wanted to blog about it but wouldn't.  Last night however, was the final straw!  That dog is on acreage and there are no trails through the trees and hunting it down in the middle of the night on their property is not an option.  Milk bones won't work or I'd have done that too.  His favorite place is nearest my bedroom window.  Guess what, his owner can't hear him from hers.

Hi Rob,  Gonna try my best but without good uninterrupted sleep it is hard to function.

Hi Ricki,

We had that problem when we lived in California (for years). We finally solved it by moving away from there. Even animal control didn't seem to help. They said they had to catch the dog howling and barking and since it only happened after 10pm, how was that going to work? It's a hard thing to deal with. How about milk bones with a sleeping pill in them. Just kidding!

Hi Toni,  That would work if I could get to him but then some other animal might get it too.  He loves to chase deer all night long on acreage.  Owners are oblivious to neighbors and in the country the laws dont help.

I so agree.  I think a dog that barks all the time is a problem anyway.  Clearly the dog is not getting enough attention.  I have a border collie living next door and routinely will bark 3 or 4 hours during the day.  I am angry with you, and I love my dog.  He only barks when he is letting me know something important.

Ricki,

Shows a total lack of respect on their part.  I also would call them every time the dog barks.

Ricki sorry you are going through this. You may have to have a sit-down with the neighbors and the dog. One positive thing, you got to stay up and write a blog. It was probably a skunk or raccoon that made him bark. Time to get out the BB Gun and go hunting.

Yes Lorrie,  Don't get me to thinking that way :)

Hi Larry,  Yes, they bark when something is wrong but this one is out hunting deer at night.

I do Richard and I am usually not my Nice Self.  Especially when I have important early morning meetings and my sleep is being interrupted.

Funny Carl & Ceil,  Blog writing at 2:00 AM is not really what I most like to do when I work this much. If the acreage was not so dense, I might just go hunting myself.  Or better yet, I might move further out, totally away from neighbors. I'm getting desperate here :)

Ricki-  I'm a dog lover, I have 3 dogs.  A giant black Lab, a Pug and a Puggle.  My big Lab can bark, he can even sound pretty scary.  He guards my home and also sleeps on his own leather love seat in my room at night.  If I think I hear something downstairs at night, I'm pretty sure it was nothing if this big guy doesn't wake up.

If your neighbor has a dog outside in this weather, I feel sorry for the dog.

My dogs might bark in the yard sometimes and it is usually because a squirrel was taunting them on the fence.  I would never allow my dogs to bark all night, what kind of people are they?

Ricki - We are lucky that we don't have that issue in the middle of the night, but we do have neighbors with a dog that barks MOST of the day. I dont understand why they bark so much. Our neighborhood is relatively quiet and the dog is in the backyard. I could understand if there were kids running around and the dog barked at them protecting the house... but I really think it barks because it wants to come in the house. Either let the dog in the house, strap a collar on it, or give the dog away to a family that will give it the attention he/she needs. Its a good idea to wake them up also.

Hi Melissa,  I agree.  Why is that dog out at night when it is below freezing?  They don't seem to care about the dog or their neighbors.

Hi John,    I know what you mean.  Dogs can bark all day long too.  If someone sleeps in the daytime, it can be just as bad.  Obviously, they are not attending to the dogs needs.  Maybe they are at work and don't care or know.  Someone should inform them.

Ricki,

I sympathise with you. In the last house we lived in we couldn't use the backyard as whenever we went out there my neighbors dog would bark non stop. It was one of those high pitched barks that meant you couldn't even hear yourself think with all the racket going on.

I don't know of any cure for a yapping neighbor dog, particularily when the owners won't even do anything about it. Although perhaps next time you are up in the middle of the night record the dog, even if it's a three or more hour recording and then give it to your neighbors so that they can hear for themselves the neverending noise.

In the meantime if you have their email address, just send them a copy of this post. Maybe they will realise then that this is an issue that needs a longterm solution.

Best of luck to you!!!

:)

I went out and got a painr ball gun, to put some color in their life. Their friend will think they have gone punck. As of tonight there is one runny around, thats black white and red.

Hi Ricki... this is simply indicative of the total lack of respect that many people seem to have for others in this day and age.  I hope this is a not too frequent occurrence.

Hi Connective Realty,   We actually went and talked to the Sheriff but right after that they put the dog up and we haven't heard it for a while.  This has happened before but the next time it happens, guess what! :)

Hi Dale,   We had a problem with a skunk once and it got trapped inside our garage.  We cut an apple in pieces and made a trail to the outside and it followed the apple slices right  out of our house.  Never saw it again.  Maybe that might help you get rid of them and then put moth balls under the house.  That should keep them away. :) Have a great weekend!

Hi Steve,   When I wrote this blog, it was happening every night so I was totally exhausted and trying to work every day.  Recently though, they have put the dog up at night. PG!  :)
