Daytona Racing, scariest
thing I ever saw...
Whenever Daytona 500 time rolls around I remember this one.
Here is a slide show video of a fiery crash in the Daytona 500
consolation race from 1984. I was standing on pit road when
this happened. If you have been to Daytona, it's a really big
place. From where I was on pit road it was several hundred
yards maybe even a 1/4 mile away. A few seconds after the
crash I just felt a huge heat wave blow over me. To make it
even worse my dad was in this race. He was way behind this
accident. Look at :52 in to the video and you'll see car #50
pass under the accident. He was 50 years old at the time and
trying to be NASCARS
oldest rookie.
This was scary stuff and quite amazing that both drivers
survived, although with some serious injuries.

The cars today are so much more safe than the "old" days. Growing up outside of Daytona I always watched these guys - before it became big time!

Bob,
Many people don't realize the improvements in safety for our street autos that have resulted from automobile racing. A good example is the placement and desighn of fuel tanks because of crashes like this one. Thanks for the post and I will be watching on Sunday!

Still being here during the Daytona 500 it is still scary stuff. Although much safer these days than in yesteryear.

The cars are much safer now. Of course, at the time they were as safe as they knew how to make them. The fuel was contained in an aircraft type fuel cell with a rubber bladder. But if you hit it hard enough it will still rupture.
It was a consolation race for the drivers who did not Qualify for the 500. Not a big race in the scheme of things that's why there were so few folks in the stands.

It's good to know that things are safer now. My uncle had an opportunity to drive in Daytona (not the 500) and loved it.

I still wish it was truly "stock car" racing. not that I am a fan of the sport at all, but at least in the golden days of racing they actually raced stock cars... at least the bodies resembled cars you could buy.
