Technology and us

How did we ever get so hooked up to technology.  And how did it happen in 10 short years.  Yesterday I put down my cell phone at noon.  I honestly started reaching for it unconsciously two or three times.  I was practicing for an upcoming trip.  I am become so connected that sometimes my clients know that they can reach me anytime of day or evening.

About a month ago I had a client get upset at me because I was unreachable when I was in the hospital.  Sad but true.  Normally I take phone calls almost all the time.  I got so bad my wife told me that she wanted me phone free some hours of the day.  So I am trying to do that for her.  I have to take care of who's number one in life.  So I have to and want to spend phone free time with my wife.

What amazes me is that how we didn't have this technology 10 years ago or didn't call so much ten years ago.  We couldn't afford the minutes ten years ago.  So how connected are you?

Russ- great commentary.  I remember when I got a pager right out of school, how I felt like I had a tether on me from my boss.  Now with the internet, cell phones, laptops, GPS- it's amazing how connected we all are!  I think it's mostly good.  It's globalized competition (Have you read "The World is Flat" by Thomas Friedman yet?), but on the other hand, the lowered barriers have enabled much more opportunities for people to enter the marketplace.

Certainly, you have to set limits.  My wife insists on a "phone off" time at home, too, from dinner until the next morning.  My sister has found a creative use for my 13-year-old niece's camera phone: If my niece says she's at a friend's house, my sister has her take and send a picture of where she's at and who she's with- no more wondering if she's really at the mall!

I turn my cell phone on at 8 AM and turn it off at 8 PM.  I don't care how much you love the biz, 12/7 is enough.

I wasnt doing RE ten years ago, but people seem to "need" instant communication now.  Waiting for a return call no longer seems to be an option.

I'm not THAT connected. Sometimes I just let my phone go to message. That way I can call back IF it's important enough.
