A Lesson For All of us From An American Idol Quitter

By
Education & Training with REIC™

I'm going to try hard to not sound like some cable channel entertainment reporter here...

However, Wednesday night, American Idol contestant Kat Nestel quit right before her group performance, fearful she was going to mess up.

She didn’t want to humiliate herself despite already passing two solo auditions.

Talk about letting fear block your dreams…

While the show does offer music and vocal coaching to the contestants, I wonder if anyone coaches them on facing the fears of performing?

In reality...why should they?

It's common for performers, even the most successful, to deal with stage fright.  If a contestant turns and walks away, they have someone else waiting to take a beating from Simon. If the contestant can't overcome their fear, it's only her loss right?

In no small way, it's the same in the real estate business. Your "auditions" are prospecting and making presentations. If you don't do it, your competition will. If you don't do it, its only your loss.

One of our coaches was telling me this morning how he is continually surprised that most agents don't lead generate. They might be marketing, but they don't spend time lead generating. A lot of them are afraid to so they need a coach to help through it.

The key is accepting the presence of fear and still doing what needs to be done. You don't have to like it… you just need to do it if you want the freedom, flexibility, and income top agents have.

I still remember being sick and terrified as a young lawyer preparing for my first appearance in court. It's a great feeling when that fear gives way to a sense of accomplishment. The same thing happens to the top agents we coach too.

If Kat had access to a free coaching call on American Idol maybe things would have ended differently for her.

So what fears are blocking you?

That is really interesting, a good point about fear stopping a singer from taking a grab for the brass ring on American Idol.  Very good example.  A top-producing agent friend of mine likes to say, "Ignorance on fire beats knowledge sitting still."  Even if you don't know everything, taking massive action - in spite of or after overcoming fear - will garner results.

What a great quote Lisa. I'd never heard that one before but it's so true. It amazing what can happen tomorrow, next week, or even years down the road if we take action today. I've seen it our coaching business and our agents experience the same thing too. Thank you for reading!

I have a fear of public speaking even though I have done it many times. I do understand how fears can drive a person but cannot accept the lack of trying....how else can you gage success if you refuse to even jump in! Very nice post John.
