Weekly Inspiration - Keeping Your Dream Alive
Well, it’s hasn’t been quite a week since the Super Bowl but people are still talking about it. For those of you who have somehow missed the big news, the New Orleans Saints won after playing an exciting game with the Indianapolis Colts.
One of the great things about the game was that no matter who you were rooting for this year, you were rooting for the ‘good guys’. I haven’t been able to find anyone who doesn’t like Peyton Manning (Colts Quarterback) and his amazing football family with his brother, Eli, playing as Quarterback for the New York Giants and his father, Archie, a former Saints Quarterback. And while that’s a pretty amazing story, that’s not the one that I’d like to share today.
The man who lead the Saints to their Super Bowl victory, Drew Brees, has a story that many now know. But for those who don’t, I felt compelled to share his story of inspiration.
Drew was originally drafted to the San Diego Chargers where he played until he had potential career ending injury. While no longer under a long-term and in the last game of the season, Drew dislocated his throwing shoulder. An absolutely devastating blow for a Quarterback. What made it even worse was that the doctors only gave him 25% chance of ever playing again. At this point, many of us may have started asking the question why me.
But instead, Drew pushed forward working on his rehabilitation and holding onto the dream of continuing to play football and someday making it to the Super Bowl. Just 6 short months after Katrina, while Drew was working on recovering from his injury the Saints called on Drew to be their Quarterback and lead them on their football related recovery. They said to him;
We have as much confidence in you as you have in yourself.
Drew continued to rebuilt his body as New Orleans has been both rebuilding their football team, and their lives. And the rest, as they say, is history.
I can’t even imagine what it must be like to work towards something your entire life, starting at an early age in a sport, putting in the effort and dedication daily to keep your body and mind in top condition and then be told that there’s only a 25% chance of being able to continue on with your dream. The amount of self confidence and determination that he must have had to muster on a daily basis is pretty amazing. But look at what his reward was.
During a recent interview, he said that he and the team are used to coming back from huge deficits and that’s helped him to focus on moving forward and not looking at the score board while the game is still in play.
I believe this is a pretty inspiring story of courage and of someone who looked inward, kept his own dream alive when others doubted his ability and kept driving forward until he made it to the goal line.
